Hi all, I have a 1000pt tournament coming up using the highland rules. Highland rules for people who dont know are that you can not have any duplicates,
so only 1 dread 1 land speeder 1 grey hunter pack 1 long fang pack and so on no matter what the variant. So the last time I went to one of these tournaments
I got destroyed i came 31th out of 32. My list was very balanced but most had power armys the Dante fun bus comes to mind. So I thought I'd give it a Space
Wolf guard pack
(5) 5 x terminator armour
1/ power weapon combi-plasma 2/ chainfist storm shield 3/ frost axe
4/ powerfist cyclone missile launcher 5/ powerfist
Grey hunter pack
(10) 2 x meltaguns power weapon wolf standard drop pod
Land raider redeemer multi-melta
A very small list i know but the terminators should kick ass and the fact Logans about making them troops is all good. The plan is the grey hunters take an
objective and the land raider is all up in the enemy's face provided it doesn't die on turn 1
I wouldn't think of your army as a balanced list (no offense). The reason is due to the fact that you only had 4 units and one of them was a independent character, a tank, a squad of 5 men and a squad of ten men. Space marine armies might not have much numbers but this army actually adds to that fact.
My instinct would have definitely been to add a blood claw squad and a grey hunter squad first just to give you a strong, flexible troop core to take on any objective mission. I might also throw in the odd occasional weapon with either of them but blood claws would be use to take out other troop infantry and grey hunters would be used for support fire.
Why did you add a land raider????? True that you need a transport but think about it, you invested 1000 points on 4 units so on average each unit costed 250 points so there must be a probelm because there is no adavatage if your against a horde army apart from your land raider redeemer but enemies could focus all their fire onto that to blow it up. It doesn't add much long range firepower and seriously, why a land raider redeemer. Since it's a smaller game than usual( on average games are usually about 1500 points) their units would be much more spread out than usual so they could also out maneouvre your tank with ease. Long fangs with missile launchers and las cannons are better as they are better at handling tanks than a land raider and seriously, how much anti tank do you need in such a small game. Just settle with the long fangs and give a few meltaguns and powerfists to the terminators and you'll be fine.
Now here in my opinion is another big probelm, the terminators are too overpriced and they are the unit that "if they get destroyed then you lose" unit. I'd just settle with a few wolf guard terminators and a few upgraded with powerfists and that's it. Your SW codex is even lucky enough to have the ability to take power weapons or power fists which is better than the normal space marine codex as they don't have the option to take power weapons so you get cheaper termies. Take advantage of that!!! Terminators are good but since this unit is a foot slogging one, ( the enemy units will be hard to reach and since termies aren't a big unit and can only move up to 12", they can be easily outmaenouvred then shot down) you definitely need a land raider which will further increase their price but that is fine if you know how to play them well as that is at least 350 points for just a unit inside a tank.
Logan Grimnar is alright but having a pricy HQ has more drawbacks than pros in the fact that if you lose him/her than you'll lose a lot of points. I'd jut settle with a Lord or a priest so it just fulfills the need for one HQ slot and can support the army as at the moment, all Logan is doing is making your terminator squad more deadly in combat which is not needed since terminators won't face many difficult assaulty units and that he makes them troop choices which needs some rethinking.
I have to agree a lot with what was said above. You have a super elite list, but for all their eliteness, it's not very survivable.
I would start from the ground up. Right now, you're main issue is that you're choosing very expensive options, but the choices are not uniform. Ie: you have logan, who makes wolf guard scoring, but you're not utilizing him to the fullest extent by putting in the grey hunters.
I understand you're limited on your choices (can't spam grey hunters), but blood claws aren't that bad, and if you put them with a barebones wolf priest, they can become pretty fierce. You can still chose strong choices like rune priests, thunderwolves, wolf scouts, long fangs, and so forth. Go for them.
Again sorry if your point was dont take either land raider or Terminators.
However definately agree with all thats said above, drop the land raider and terminators,
Each of these is worth 1/4 of you army, and its just too many points to lose in a single blow, In low point games its importants to split your points as much as possible,
Think about this, Your land raider is worth 250pts standard now can you really say it will take out at least 250 points of you opponennts army to make back its points?
Just to put this into context thats:
20 Necron Warriors
25 Dark Eldar Wyches
25 Fire Warriors
Now I've just listed troops choices because the majority of your targets will be troops (probably) and I trying to point out worst case,
So if your Land raider only takes out 50 points worth then the other units have so much more work to do.
If He is For me, Who shall stand against me
Now, think about this, unless some idiot goes charging in with their bloodletters ( as they are listed above) into a pointless assault into your land raider than yes, what i talked about before will go into effect. Now, think about this, he's going into a tournament that might have some very experienced players or might not have very good players. The good army lists will have anti tank weapons almost certainly and they would definitely give some consideration into taking out a land raider. 1/4 of your army is a moving massive target for a tank which could easily be shot at by lascannons etc. This would definetely not be good news.
If he plays carefully, he could wipe out 250 points as it's the last thing you said and to honest with you, I don't like gambles. WHY??? The land raider can only face some certain armies well(horde armies etc.) and if they are like tau that have broadsides you are in trouble. In small games, you have very few targets so tanks can often be shot at a lot but however, in small games units are spread out more. SPREAD OUT MORE, that's the reason I don't like the land raider redeemer as it's the worst choice out of the three to take. Unless it is an assault vehicle with a tooled up squad(which i only recommend in at least 1500 point games) than it will be leading a suicide charge into a stranded unit that the opponent expected to die anyways before he counterattacks and your land raider goes BOOM! Another thing to consider, say he has done what I have just said, and you decide to play carefully but how do you play carefully! Hide behind a big hill and hope his big pointed enemy unit asks to be killed?? If he's that spread out, your tank's going to have to do a bit of chasing and with the current army list he's got, there are no other big distractions to possibly make the opponent think of firing at another unit because the termies and Logan are inside.
In smaller games, having numbers certainly count and having a big land raider doesn't help.
