Ok, here we go:
When I first started warhammer, it was because I liked painting. When I chose an army, I took the one that looked best, hence ending up in this forum.
The next step is making the army work well on the battlefield, while still using cool models, and this is where my problem evolves.
I'm currently in progress converting a unique Inquisitor (or Inq. Lord) wearing terminator armor and huge lightening claws. Problem is he'll cost 70pts (or 95 as a Lord, plus retinue) and I don't know how to make his points worth.
Letting him run solo seems like a stupid idea, but I can't run him with my terminators, as he won't always be able to Deepstrike.
I could throw him with my IST's, but they are not supposed to be in close combat.
I do have a retinue with 3xpowerfists and 3x acolytes. But I don't like the fact that the Lord strikes at I5 (with familiar) and the fists go last. Plus the retinue is expensive and fragile, so I seldom use it.
Any ideas? There must be some good way to incorporate an inquisitor with Terminator armor and Lightening claws, I just don't know how.
I've used an Inquisitor with artificer armor and a pair of claws myself, so maybe I can help ^_^
First off, I don't use CC-oriented retinues. Between T3, bad saves, and a S6 from the servitors, among an army of T4, power armor, and S6 on everything, they don't appeal to me. I guess if you're radical, but that's a whole 'nother story.
I don't field any land raider variants, but that'd be a good place to put him if you do. This'd be a way to use a retinue as well - buy him a full on retinue & a TP homer, toss him in a Raider, and let him call down your GK support.
Similarly, join him to an IST unit in a Chimera (Chimera has 12 slots, IST max out at 10, and terminator armor takes up two slots - coincidence? I think not!. Don't bother tooling up the IST for combat, just give them 2x plasma or melta as usual. When they get close to the enemy line, disconnect the Inquisitor from the unit and have him move away and call down your GK again (and again, he'd need a TP homer for this to work right).
In my experience, enemies tend to ignore a retinue-less Inquisitor when I'm using GK for the same reason I don't use combat retinues - S6 is the max, T3, etc. I mean, it isn't like you can march him across the field alone or anything, but he definitely ranks low on the totem pole compared to GK Terminators ^_^ So use him in a sneaky manner and call in support - granted, he'd be the weakest part of a GK Termie squad, but he's still something to be afraid of!
Just a comment: An =I= Lord is required to have a retinue of at least 3. Therefore, if you use him as an =I= Lord he can't technically be attached to an IST unit.
An =I= Lord is best being shooty. If you instead take him as an Elite choice =I= then it would be useful to attach him to an IST squad. He ends up being a better stat line than upgrading an IST to a vet for the same cost. He can add some CC goodness and psychic powers to an otherwise weak Cc unit.
Yeah I know a Lord would need a retinue and that's a shame. Therefore I'll take him as a regular Inq.
Megalo, you said the inquisitor would be the weakest part of a terminator retinue, then do you think he's worth his points?
I think I'll give him artificer armor and use him with a 9 man GK squad in my LR, or with my 10 man squad of IST's in a chimera, give him a TP homer and call down the other guys.
People probably won't fear a Chimera of IST's and will swallow their tounge when a nasty inquisitor pops out accompanied by teleporting GK's.
I don't know if I'll be able to "sneak" with him unless hidden in a transport, if my converting ideas turn out as well as I hope, it's gonna be one badass model.
Well, S3/T3, and none of the GK's special rules, so yes he'd be the weakest part of the group. But he's still got a good save and some kickass weaponry, so he isn't exactly a detriment to the unit. I definitely think it's worth it just for the joy of bringing down 500 points of GK Terminator doom on target!Megalo, you said the inquisitor would be the weakest part of a terminator retinue, then do you think he's worth his points?
