You should really get tactical squads because they are the backbone of any army.... the more the better. So ya definately Tactical squad.

Don't actually play SM, but what he said the basic troops are the best models in most 40k armies. You'll also need some heavy support if your playing a 'shooty' army or some assault troops if your playing and 'assaulty' flavour army (you need both things in the end anyway, but your army style should determine what you get first). Don't always be attracted by the flash things either look at how much of a bargain you can get out of your rank and file... you'll usually be pleasently suprised. Also I'd suggest holding off ont he vehicles until you've decided what flavour your army will be and played a few small games, vehicles can shape and army and they are expensive pieces of kit when you realise you've bought hte wrong ones. What chapter are you playing? I should really say good luck.... but I have to say I hope you lose horribly and have all your chapters souls consumed by the Dark Eldar, after a suitably long period of torture and agony of course.

If you would have taken some effort into reading the codex you would have seen that you need 1 HQ and 2 Troops as a minimum to field.

So that is pretty much obvious.

After that add 1 entry of Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support to it.

Then I would advice you to keep a Poll like this

What chapter are you starting? If you are staring a cc chapter ex BA, BT then from what I hear tac squads can have bp and cc weapons in the new codex. So wait till that comes out then think if you want a cc chapter then go for the tac squad with bp and cc weapons.

Conclusion: Get the new SM codex next or if you are unfamiliar with the rules then you should purchase the 4 ed rulebook. And if you mean models then go for the tactical squad

I'm fielding my own chapter, The Hawk Hunters, they use small squads of tactical squads and scout squads with termies in reserve and sneak up on the enemy and take them by surprise.

You must get a Tactical squad first. they are the backbone of your army. then a devastor squad for anti-armor and/or a good old Dreadnought (you gotta get one of these).

Also, a Landspeeder would be a nice addition to any army (or Whirlwind or Razorback). Then get another Tac squad or an Assult squad if you want to do CC.

Since your're new it's okay, but your're not supposed to bring up month old posts. Read the rules, it should be somewhere on the front page.
