Thread: New To 40k

    Well I've been interested in 40k for a while now I've read a few of the books and are looking at getting into the game I've got a copy of the new IG codex and have decided for the moment on this 500pt army I'm not quite sure if its legal though see below

    HQ
    Junior Officer 65pts
    (Storm Bolter, Carapace Armour)
    (2 Gardsmen Lasguns,Heavy Weapon Crew Autocannon)
    Commissar (Bionics, Carapace Armour,Storm Bolter, Surveyor) 57pts

    Mortar Support Squad 80pts

    Ogryn Squad (3 Ogryns) 75pts

    Techpreist Enginseer 90pts
    (Plasmapistol)

    2 Infantry Squads (All Lasguns, Sergeants Shotguns) 120pts

    Total 497pts

    The codex states you must have two troop selections does that mean two squads? or two platoons? eg. one of normal infantry and another of consripts etc? I realize what I've outlined isn't the most powerful I could get with 500pts but that wasn't my intention I'd rather start with something interesting that is a base for a larger army.

    right an Ig platoon consists of up to fifty men all arrayed into ten man squads. ina troop choice you can take a full platoon hence ina single MOC you can have 300 men, in a troop choice you can ten men or up to fifty men.

    also lose the ogyryns and tech priest and servitor in 500 pts, they wont be much of a help in so small a game

    You've forgotten to get a platoon command. You must have one of these for each platoon. I suggest you go for a 400 point army first so you can play combat patrol (40k in 40 minutes)
    You only need one troops choice for that and you don't need to take a normal platoon for conscripts or armoured fist squads. Do you have the 4th edition rulebook?

    thanx for the replies Yep I have the book I'm completely new to this so no doubt I've interpreted some of the rules incorrectly I'm a bit confused do I need a HQ squad with an officer and an officer leading each platoon is this correct? Don't know what the gamming sence is like in my area I think it would be pretty limited so I'm more interested in standard games thanx for your help.

    Ok I think I understand know after reading a bit more is this what you mean?

    HQ
    Junior Officer 65pts

    1 Sentinel (Multlaser) 45pts

    Platoon 1

    2 Infantry Squads (2 Heavy Bolters, Sergeants Shotguns) 140pts

    Platoon 2
    Junior Officer (Storm Bolter) 45pts
    2 Conscript Squads (All Lasguns) 80pts

    Total 500pts

    In addition is it worth giving Infantry platoons say bolters? at 1pt each thats only 9pts a squad this gives them some AP capabilities at a cost of reduced range. Does anyone give conscripts heavy weapon squads I don't see the point with their BS2 and extra cost over normal platoons or have I got the rules wrong.

    Better, but not quite right :)

    Conscripts aren't bought in regular platoons, they are bought as conscript-only platoons with 2-5 squads of conscripts. They don't need any officers and operate as a single squad. It's a bit confusing but if you buy for example 3 squads of conscripts in a conscript platoon they will count as a single squad of 30 men when you play battles. The squad system is only used to calculate the number of heavy weapons they get.

    Secondly, nobody can get stormbolters unless they can buy equipment from the armoury. Only officers, commissars, preachers, enginseers, veteran sergeants and a few others can do that. It says whether can or not in their entry in the army list.

    If you want the absolute minimum you can get in an army I suggest:
    1 command HQ (this is the obligatory HQ choice of your army)
    1 armoured fist squad
    1 Infantry platoon consisting of:
    -- 1 platoon HQ
    -- 2 infantry squads

    This will give you about 40 men and one Chimera APC. You could get another infantry platoon instead of the armoured fist squad, or a conscript platoon. Your choice. The list above gives you the least amount of models to paint though and can always be reorganized by giving one of the HQ's the Chimera and moving the armoured fist squad into another platoon.

    Or two grenadier squads and a command squad, although im not sure how good they would do under fire !
