I play Tau, and my main opponents i come against are space marines in thier various forms, and the seem really good at winning agianst my army, so i want to know what tactics SM players use agianst Tau.

I play both Marines and Tau.
Tau always field some good guns, and the best Tau players choose which enemy units they want to get rid of before the game, and then concentrate on just these without getting sidetracked. To combat this, Marine players should choose many units of around equal worth, or a decoy unit that will take alot of punishment, and still do damage should the Tau player not take the bait and ignore it.
A good Marine player will also try to aim at taking out the Ethereal as soon as possible, and the Tau player will usually put him behind terrain or in a good unit such as Broadsides. As a Marine player Deep Striking is the best way to deal with a Tau battle line, but the inability to move means that you will take alot of casualties doing it.
Also it take ages to get used to playing with an army as different as the Tau, so just keep practising and soon you'll find what style suits you.

usually Sm players try to take small equall sized units, to spread the shots of the tau out.. I would suggest taking out his units one by one, starting with things like death company for BA, tactical sqauds with plasma cannons and/or CC weapons and assault marines and things like blood claws for space wolves ( 4 attack on the charge, 15 in a squad, hits on a 4+, you do the math).
Assault them first if need be to gain the most number of attacks possible. but at WS 2 its more of a token thing, and they will still fight first, as they have a highr I value.
Um. Marine players also try to get into CC as quickly as possible. try and annoy him by using Crisis suits to jump from like 14 inches away to 8 inches, take all your shots with PR and MP or BC and then jump away 6. they move 6. move, shoot, move. it annoys the heck out of them because they cant get you in CC. works very well with assault terminator sqauds (termies with thunder hammers and lighning claws).
A wise man once said: Blow me @$$wipe
I basically stick to the cover as well as possible and deep strike any units possible with my attack bikes turbo boosting up the flanks to take out the ever present hammer head.
I'd focus on one unt at a time with as many squads as possible and if he sends flanking bikes charge them with what ever you have closest.
And never underestimate the tau battlesuits commnader in cc (shas'o?) str 5 T5 is always handy. Unless he has power weapons then your screwed
