Long story short, some friends will be coming over for Thanksgiving and we plan to cram in as many 40k in 40 minutes games as we can.

We'll all be making a bunch of different lists, and Id like some help with some Guard lists. All ideas are welcome. Id like to be competitive without being cheesy.

If you need to read up on the 40 minute rules, you can find them here: GW 40 minute rules.

    Ack you again!

    *grins* j/k ^__^

    Ok, *looks for IG dex*

Ok..Now, I don't play Guard, so slap me if Im wrong.

    1. 5 Squads of 10, each with a Melta. (I would say Plasma, but I sometimes dont see the point of guard taking Plasma, Overheats don't seem to like their armour too much.
Then you have 50 points spare to kit a couple of squads out with Hvy Weapons, depending on what you own.

    2. An Armoured Fist squad with Melta, and a Chimera and 3 Normal squads with a Melta in each....again you have 50 points left over to kit them out with any Hvy Weapons youmay want

    Hope these are ok =o_O=

It really depends on the minis you have. My combat patrol (as it's called in the new rulebook) is something like this:
An armoured fist squad with lascannon and plasmagun.
A large conscript squad, made up from regular infantry of my larger army.
Two autocannon sentinels as separate squadrons
A command squad tooled for CC and iron discipline, to keep an eye on the conscripts.

You could switch the sentinels for a basilisk, but be sure to sleep with one eye open as your friends will want to kill you :)

The other 2% are smart enough to question the 'science' behind that number...
    And it's spelled EMPEROR!

I just recently got a basilisk, but Im not sure using that would be in the spirit of a "patrol" game.

I have a rediculous number of models, and enough parts to make just about everything else.

Ive taken conscripts once, in the only 40 minute rule game Ive ever played, and it was a giant pain to move 50 models around. However, I completely trampled the Tau opponent (it was a three way game). I will probably make a conscript list.

Lists I will be facing will all come from Eldar, Chaos Marines, Guard, and possibly Space Marine armies.

Heres a quick 400 point Guard list I threw together today when I was bored:

    HQ:
    Comand Platoon
1 - JO (Power Weapon, Storm Bolter)
    4 - Guardsmen (2 Grenade Launchers, 1 Melta gun, 1 Lasgun)
    Fire Support
    3 - Hvy Bolter Teams
    TOTAL: 156 points

    TROOPS:
    Inf. Platoon Command Squad
1 - JO (Power Weapon, Storm bolter)
    4 - Guardsmen (2 Grenade Launchers, 1 Meltagun, 1 Flamer)

    2 x Inf Squad:
Vet. Sgt. (Storm bolter, CCW), 9 Guardsmen (1 Meltagun, 8 Lasguns)
    TOTAL: 244 points

Like Foxy, I dont think Guard flak armor is well suited to toting plasma weapons.

Here's a combat patrol list of mine, its never been used so tell me what you think.

    Doctrines
    Grenadiers
    Sharpshooters
    Ratling Squads

    HQ
    Command Platoon:
Senior Officer (carapace armour, storm bolter)
    Vetreran (bolter)
    Grenade Launcher
    Missile Launcher
    Sharpshooters
    105 Points

    Troops
    6 Stormtroopers:
    Plamagunx2
    80 Points

    6 Stormtrooper:
    Grenade Launcherx2
    76 Points

    Elites
    4 Ratlings
    44 Points

    Fast Attack
    Sentinel:
    Multilaser
    45 Points

    Sentinel:
    Autocannon
    50 Points

    TOTAL- 400 points

I know it may not be the most combat effective 40k in 40mins list but i'm trying to keep it fluffy. Also, i was thinking i should maybe drop one of the sentinels to get more stormtroopers, or drop a lot of stuff and get a chimera.

    ++EDIT++ forgot to total points

Seems like a really well rounded list, lots of different unit/weapon types.

You may have difficulty dealing with foes geared for close combat, but good strategy should help give you enough time to shoot.

EDIT: One of the most fun things about "patrol" games is that you can lose (often quickly) and still have plenty of time to change your list around and play more games.

The race is on between a friend and I to see who can come up with the best 200 point Armored Fist squad (and then take 2 of them to fill the 400 points) Any ideas?

    can't use Ordnanace in Patrol.

personally i think IG have two things going for them in Patrol.
    1. numbers
    2. guns.

actually these aren't limited to just patrol games...

i really feel Grenadiers are a waste of points in patrol. they're not point effecient at all!!

i mean look at what you get for 10 points in other armies

i go with a simple set up in my 400 patrol list

i use two platoons Alpha and Bravo. they're identicle

    platoon command squad
JO w/ Iron Disp, ccw, laspistol
    Mortar
    55pts

    1st squad
    Missle Launhcer
    75pts

    2nd squad
    Heavy Bolter
    70 pts

    platoon: 200

    Total = 400

    Doctrines
    Iron Disp
    Close Order Drill
    Drop Troop

you get Ld 9 from the command squad + COD
    you get 6 heavy weapons
    you get 50 bodies

Mortars, some people hate them but i have two reasons for including them.
    1. my command squads are out of LOS and i still want them to do something
    2. in a small point game, indirect is invaluable. it puts pressure on opponents to come and face you, and as IG you want to be on the defensive.

    optional:
sometimes i drop the 2nd platoon and take an Armored Fist squad

BoxAnt's list is a very good one. I tried squeezing in as many heavy weaps as possible and and made a mess.

My army performs incredibly well against CC orientated armies, but gets an asswhipping against armies that shoot back. This is because I use two heavy weapons squads which is where most of my heavy weapons are. far to fragile against enemy guns without any distractions like Russes and RR's.

Anyway, I like your list BoxAnt, I'm going to try a few small variations of it.

Yeah, I dont think I would ever drop troops in a patrol game, but you built a solid platoon.
