I'm wanting to create a new SM army for 4th Ed, and I've been brainstorming ideas. I really wanted to do a chapter that had some history in the 40K universe but one that wasn't already defined, so that I could customize the army to match the theme.

I came up with the Executioners chapter, here are my brainstorming notes--let me know what you think:

Chapter's librarians were all killed by a mysterious psychic event that precipitated a meeting with the Lamenters and Astral Claws chapters; Chapter Master and senior leaders deceived by Lufgt Huron of the Astral Claws (posessed by warp entities?); when Executioners joined the rebellion, the Chaplains were exiled and sent to Terra to deliver a list of grievances/ultimatums.

After Badab war, home world forfeited to Star Phantoms; Chapter Master and Company captains all tried and executed; Chaplains restored to chapter and given command during the 100 year penitent crusade.

Through the course of the campaign, battle losses have reduced the chapter to less than 25% strength, mostly hardened fighters who are determined to finish the penance and restore the honor of their chapter--but they must survive with enough geneseed intact to reestablish the brotherhood...hence scouts are always present on the battlefield.

Their colors are Shadow Grey with highlights, and they use standard codex markings. Their shoulder badge is black because their previous heraldry was rescinded by the High Lords of Terra, never to be seen again under Imperial command. They will have new heraldry bestowed if they survive their penitent campaign, and will have to liberate a new homeworld for themselves. No battle standards or personal standards may be used.

Dwindling numbers and lack of a large armory have forced them to rely mostly on their infantry in small, precision engagements. They are the crusade Warmaster's favorite elite reserve unit, thrown in at the decisive point to sway battles.

Army will often, if not always, field The Executioner. (like Emperor's Champion?)

Only HQ choice that can be taken is a Chaplain (until the crusade is complete).

So what rules/traits/restrictions should I use to represent them?

Purge all the heretics,
Kill the alien scum,
Suffer not the unclean to live,
And have a beer when you're done.

What happened to "Scythes of the Emperor"? They sounded cool.

Hmmm...going just off the fluff for the chapter for traits I'd say either Pious : Purity Above All (Considering their history they'd be trying to prove their loyalty and purity as much as they can)or Sombre: Seen But Don't Be Seen.(You already have all those scouts infiltrating, plus a chapter that small would want to employ sneaky guerilla tatcics as much as possible, since they don't have the rescources to take an enemy head on.)

For disadvatages I'd say either Flesh Over Steel (they obviously wouldn't have the rescources other chapters have) or Apire To Glory (again for the same reasons). We Stand Alone would work really good with the fluff, so would Have Faith in Suspicion and Faitful Unto Death.

You may wanna look at what they do with the BT when they get thier own codex too..they've always had a pretty good setup for Crusading chapters.

You should have them all be from a planet called Fenris, and they all live in a giant fortress called "The Fang". Oh oh, AND, they could be all obsessed with wolves and stuff cus' their cool. In fact since their from space, you COULD call this compleatly new army I just made up "Outer Space Wolves". But since they are sooo cool they would only need 1 venerable dred to help them out, and I would limit the number of termies you can take to 20 or so, that way your opponet has a fighting chance.

What was that all about?

Anyway, there is an original colour scheme for the Executioners, a sort of swirly blue/silver. Some information can be found here, but the image (from Rouge Trader) is very small. It's likely that it is a campaign camouflage though, since Space Marines in those days didn't mind repainting every once in a while. Having T3 would probably motivate them to not get shot too :)

As for traits, I'd recommend 'Trust your battle-brothers', giving them true grit and counter attack. It can be explained in a number ways, their hardships have formed an even stronger bond between the marines, all of the remaining marines are veterans, lack of equipment forces them to become more flexible since they can't field assault squads etc.
'See but don't be seen' is good too, giving them a sneaky image, fitting for traitors :)
All of the disadvantages involving the word "death" or "die" works perfectly too :)

I myself am playing Lamenters during their 100 year crusade. And I have also completely chnaged the color scheme.

I have painted them grey and the badge is the silouette of a crying man rather than a bleeding heart. so by all means - change what you need/want to change. it is after all your own freedom to do so.

The "executioner" sounds really neat as a special character. why don't you use a normal leader as the Executioner instead of the Emperor's Champ?

You can also use your Chaplain as the executioner. They could be using Axes as their badge of office. Mine are using Scythes. Nobody says you need to have a crozius arcanum.

Trai wise you could use "no mercy, no respite" and "trust your battle brother".

I would suggest "Flesh over steel"to shpw their reduced numbers and equipment.

Shut up and play.

I created a chapter that took some of the ideals of the scythes of the emperor but not everything.

Overall the chapter you outlined sounds good. The story line is sound and lines it up for a good amount of battles to lead the chapter into maturity and repentance. I might have an inquisitor in the army as well to keep track of the chapter and to make sure it did not repeat past transgressions.

except that IIRC the Scythes don't have anythying to repent... They fought with the Lamenters against the tyranids and were nearly destroyed, they aren't exactly heretic material.

Actually, I was worried that I couldn't paint yellow effectively. Since I haven't started anything new yet, I'm still batting around ideas.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of using an inquisitor, but I don't want to have to buy a whole new codex...

I do like the idea of using a commander as the Emperor's champion, except that he doesn't get that cool sword. And with all the wargear he'd be really expensive (the EC was a bargain&#33.

I was shying away from BT rules because I have a fondness for devastators and hoped to include some in the future...

SO, I thank everyone for your "food for thought", right now I'm just trying to come up with a decent "core force" of 400-500 points that can stand on it's own... errgh. It's always a few points over, you know?
