oh, here's my situation, I've played 40k for about 5 years, and my girlfriend has listened to me talk about it for 4 of those years, and now she has finally showed interest in playing!! (yes!
anyway, I don't know much about the imperial armies, but when I told her that there were all women fighting forces (So she was intrigued and wanted to know more. I didn't really know more, so I thought this would be the best place to ask. (I know I should get a codex, but I just want to know some very general things about them) like the all important question: 1. "Why WH?"
so, what can I tell her about the WH in game play. 2. how are they better than other armies? 3. what are some (if any) general weak points? thanks for the help, I'm very excitied about bringing her into the game, but I don't want to suggest a bad army for her, although she seems very interesed in SoB. 4. what do you guys think?
They seem fairly unique with excellent fluff background.
Their armor, weapons, inconography, art, beliefs etc parallel many RL organizations and make them seem very believable to someone new to the game.
They perform fairly average on the table.
They look great and can look pretty dark/gothic for Emperor serving people.
Great modelling opportunities, appeals to women a little more possibly. Not too difficult or time consuming for anyone to collect or paint, yet can be a real challenge if someone wanted to diversify their army list with IG or SM allies.
They are rare to play against. A WH player can a take a little pride knowing their army is less played and not another SM'er.
Weak as far as anti-armor, but excellent at anti-infantry. Very versitile, can be quick but not overly.
A couple of good characters, The Living Saint is a sexy model. Show her that one.
Faith points put an interesting unique spin on things.
A lot of burning people alive.
Few vehicles, but the Immolator and the Exorcist are two good looking vehicles and unique to the army.
Can take IG or SM allies to mix up the list a tad, opening more options as far as vehicles etc. I would prefer an all SoB army myself.
Overall its one of those armies, like Necron or SM, that is a good starting army to keep things simple and effective. They perform well on all levels of gameplay and are not over-committed to one aspect of play. Examples being like Orc/Tyranid being a swarm/cc army type. Or IG/Tau being extremely sit back and shoot type.
For a new player like her, the fluff and stories and all that will be fun and interesting. If the fluff is fun for her, then the models, painting and playing come second nature.
in GW veterans circles SoB are commonly known as nuns with guns, after telling her this and shes still interested then she will have an army that not a lot of people use and she can be proud of it. they are nice models with some wacky units, and good ideas
on another note itsnt it great when your girlfriend/boyfriend starts playing 40k, i got my gf into it she now plays tyranids in 40k and lahmians in warhammer,
(and kicks ass when she plays with tyranids they horrible)
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
I play them simply because no matter who you play against your force doesn't need to change that much. PYRE was right about weak anti armor but that can be fixed. Induct IG platoon with lascannons or an Exorcist tank is also a good choice. They're like SM light. They do get Articles of Faith too, which can save a dying unit or put a hurt'n on others. Basically, pretty easy to paint, easy to play, and fairly rare to see. One last note this is not a close combat army because of their medium WS and Toughness . It is best to whittle down an approaching enemy and finish in an assault when their opponents are greatly outnumbered.
thanks! I will tell her this, and get her the codex, on what Cadre said, yes, it's great, it's a day I never thought would come :-D
Welcome her to the ranks of the Sisters of Battle: intolerant, homicidal pyromaniacs!
Gotta love it.
"The sword that takes life gives life."
My gf bought her first squad! she got the box of 10 sisters. She's using, unique.. and interesting colors for them, (lots of glitter)
but with christmas coming up I'm probably going to get her a squad or something like that, from the first squad of troops, where would you guys move up to? aiming for 1000 point games and trying to stick with as female of an army as possible (she really likes that part)
She is going to have two boxes of troops. From there get a blister with a cannoness for your HQ, a box of seraphim, an exorcist (I'd advise you to order the forgeworld one, it is much more game-friendly), an immolator, and maybe some heavy weapon sisters (heavy bolters) as well as a blister of sisters and a heavy flame thrower for your HQ's bodyguards. Maybe also a blister or two of assault weapons sisters. That would put you up to around 850-900 points depending on upgrades. For the remainder I would take either another box of sisters or another exorcist. That's as female as you can get I guess, unless you buy a female inquisitor
Thank you! that really helps out in giving me an idea, I'll probably get her another box of troops and a cannoness for christmas. Just out of curiosity though, (I don't know much about them I play necrons) but why the forgeworld model? also, you wouldn't recommend sisters repentia?Originally posted by idinos@Dec 9 2004, 14:18

Well, I don't remember exactly but I think the forgeworld model is cheaper. For play reasons, the forgeworld exorcist is a basic rhino with a rocket launcher in the back (think whirlwind). The GW exorcist is based on the rhino as well, but has metal plating all over the chassis and a huge organ on top that doubles its height. It also weighs a lot, so while it is a great diorama/centre-piece model it is not made for playing games since you won't want to carry two of those things with you. I only made the mistake of bringing my GW exorcist to battle once and had some idiot knock it off the table(sleeve got caught in the tubes of the organ) and it shattered into a thousand pieces - it is a pain to actually build it as well.
As for the repentias, in my view, they are a specialised counter-attack close combat unit that is not as well-protected as normal sisters. Your girlfriend won't find much use for them during her first games and they are going to be a waste of points. When she gets some experience, by all means buy some.
