I have had NO expeirence at all with Dreadnoughts. Not even fought AGAINST them. So, as I plan to have some in my new army (FW ones no less) I was wondering how they perform?
Should I go for the basic outfit? Or does a Venerable with Assault Cannon, Missile Launcher and Tank Hunter work well?
Do 2 heavy weps make him a duck in combat?
They perform quite well usually.I have had NO expeirence at all with Dreadnoughts. Not even fought AGAINST them. So, as I plan to have some in my new army (FW ones no less) I was wondering how they perform? If you are able to spare the points and the slot, upgrade to a Venerable, it makes them much more survivable. As to the outfit, if you give it an Assault Cannon and a Missile Launcher, it will be much more valuable shooting than getting bogged down in CC. I wouldn't bother with the Tank Hunter unless you expect to go up against many vehicles, in which case I would suggest the TL Lascannon. However, Dreadnoughts are eminently customisable, and I usually leave them until last and outfit them to cover a weak point in the rest of the army.Should I go for the basic outfit? Or does a Venerable with Assault Cannon, Missile Launcher and Tank Hunter work well?
Not as such, but as he will no longer have the Dreadnought CCW he will be striking at a lower strength, and will not ignore armour saves. If you expect him to get into CC with Monstrous Creatures, heavy infantry, or Vehicles, keep the CCW. If he will be going up against light infantry, go with the Assault cannon and ML, and keep him shooting.Do 2 heavy weps make him a duck in combat?

I personally will just leave them as is most of the time, especially now because that assault cannon is rending, and use them to plug gaps in my line of assault (I tend to get into HtH as soon as possible). If I have spare points, I'll take a second one, and kit it out with a TLLC and ML, and sit back and blow stuff up.

TL Las and missle makes them look all scary and a huge threat to your opponents, that's why they attract so much fire. Mine usually never live past turn 3...but sometimes it gets to shoot! Lol, I recommend taking them with assult cannon & power fist, they tend to survive a bit longer.
...and you will know my name is the lord, when I strike down my vengence upon thee...
I use mine with an assault cannon and a powerfist w/storm bolter. I find that the enemy usually tries to take it down with low strength weapons like st6 or 7 and that it takes awhile for them to take it down. The fact that it can move and still fire all its weapons is great for some mobile firepower with your tac squads, and then eventually it can assault with your troops (if your into assaulting that is). However if you sit and shoot, the lascannon and ml would be better although alittle expensive. It's great in cc since the enemy always hits the front unless immobilized which means they need to be str6 or more to hurt it (I had mine tie up 12 necron warriors at the end of the game allowing my assault squads to gang up on the lord and his retinue).
Ive played against venerable dreds and they are a nightmare and whats really cool is when my wraithlord goes toe to toe with my brothers space wolves venerable dread. so far its 2:1 to me( gotta love wraithlords) other than that it usually makes mince meat out of my army espesially my poor war walkers
He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day!
The tank hunter ven. dread with the mc and assault cannon is an excellent choice because it will have 4 shots that can glance 13, one that can glance 14 and the 4 shots have a chance to penetrate anything. Plus once it's done with tanks it can easily chew both soft and hard troops up.
I charged my dread into a wraithlord the other day, and caused a wound and in return it ripped my assault cannon off and immobilized it. Not a good idea... (although later he forgot about it and put a viper infront of it and I glanced it with thew storm bolter )Originally posted by Lazarus84@Nov 29 2004, 07:36
