I've been throwing together ideas for a Deathwing styled army as a display/fun army and I've been thinking of ways to make it unique, one idea I've been thinking of is making a Terminator Devastator of sorts.
Now I know the reasoning behind this is a tad flawed because Terminators are supposed to be close quarters units but what I've figured is that the Terminator armour is rather old (with development starting during the Great Crusade, look at the Mark 3 Armour). What I've decided is that the Chapter was reorganized after severe loses, one of the changes involved pooling the remaining Terminators suits into one unit to maximize their effectiveness. Among the Terminator Suits were some of the earliest models of the armour, to keep the ancient and revered suits intact and to provide mobile fire support the Chapter Technicians remodeled these antique Terminator suits to carry heavy weaponry.
What I'm thinking of doing is not allowing these Terminators to deepstrike and make them a 0-1 choice due to them being older models of armour and therefore much rarer, also they'll have a more limited choice of weaponry, so no plasma or autocannons and such, probably restrict it to Heavy Bolters, Meltaguns, and the Lascannon.
Putting this out here for people to take a look at it and see what could be tweaked, of course this army will never see a tournament but is mainly for the fun of it.
You're not the first to want to re-arm your terminators, here's one with a heavy plasma gun: http://www.ironhands.com/miftplas.jpg. Read his reasons on his page: Ironhands.com (not an ironhands site... :)
I've also seen one with a heavy bolter but I can't remember where.
I say go for it. If you follow the rules for regular terminator squads, 2 heavy weapons per squad, but expand their choices then I can't see any problems. They normally get assault cannons anyway, and nothing you do can be worse :D
The one thing I'm going to do is wait till the new Terminators come out so I have some new poses and such to work with.
But I think Heavy Bolter equipped Terminators might be kind of fun, it gives them some nice anti-infantry ability at a range longer than the Assault Cannon. Although I still wonder if I should remove their ability to deepstrike so opponents wouldn't freak when a pair of Meltagun equipped Termies dropped in to say 'Hi' to their Land Raider.
I would like to point out that fluff-wise the techmarines would never even DREAM of modifying such an anchient piece of technology( reffering to your anchient terminator suits). It amounts to heresey in the imperium.
However, I for one do not give a ratz ass about fluff so I say do it. Just be prepared for people to complain.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
Another reason VDR or any kind of player creation system isn't allowed heh.. It has nothing to do with fluff, it's just against the rules of the game
People would have a right to dissalow such models as it would be exceptionally easy to make any unit overpowered.
While it's an okay idea, do you want to spend time and money making miniatures you cannot use?
Actually, yeah. I don't have a whole lot to do most of the time and I'm going to limit the conversions to the one arm and part of the backpack, I'm going to use small rare earth magnets to hold the arm and such on so if I want to I can swap an arm and convert them back to somewhat normal Terminators. Their backpacks will still be rather odd looking but I can explain it away as being field repairs or simply older models of Terminator armour.
But as far as the fluff goes I'm limiting these oddly armed Terminators to two squads, so a total of four Terminators will be modified as such, this sort of represents that these suits were assembled after nearly being destroyed and were rebuilt with what was at hand, hence to the HB's and the like.
I like the idea, however, a lot of players will prolly whine about it you decide to play with it. A heavily armored (2+ / 5+ invuln) mobile heavy weapons team is pretty damned strong. In effect you are giving your lascannon a 54" reach with the 6" move. However if you find a way to limit it, like you said taking away the deepstrike then it would work. I would also try to say since the heavy weapons require more energy to use, the power used to generate the crux terminatus (5+ invuln) is redirected to the weapon core. So no more 5+ invuln. Just to make it more playable.
That was the original idea I had, but if they were integrated with normal Terminators it would result in a mixed bag of saves, of course that's not much of a matter. But I'm defenitely going to remove those squads deepstriking ability to there are no deepstriking meltaguns or anything.
Terminators have a 5+ invulnerable save?

Well not to disclose rules but they have had invulnerable saves forever, it's right in the codex.
Now on my idea what I'm thinking is to make some of the Terminators much clumsier, adding reinforced plating, boxing off some areas to make them bulkier and seem more primitive. I may pull the head off an old Mark IV 'Maximus' armour as they mention that this armour incorporated the same Sensorium system in the then ongoing Terminator Development, this would make said Mark IV head a perfect candidate for being stuck on a Terminator. Also the Heavy Bolter equipped models will have the ammunition supply mounted on the back of the shoulder pad, making those units very easily convertible back to stock Terminators by way of inserting rare earth magnets into the torso and shoulder, however the few Lascannon and Meltagun equipped Termies will have a bulked up backpack and the addition of some cabling running to the weaponry, these will be a tad harder to convert back to normal and may be convertible to AssCan and Heavy Flamer Termies only.
However I'm going to wait for the new Termies to do this as working with all the fun poses and such will be quite fun.
