I'm a new SM player, and will be playing small battles (probably 500-1000 points) with friends. I will be playing against 'Nids, Eldar (Biel Tann I think, the one with alot of aspect warriors), and Tau.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could give me a good guide line for an Ultramarine army for this situation. I will start off by having a 500 point army, and work my way up to 1000 points.
I currently have a tactical squad of marines, with a sergeant, flamer, and a missile launcher, 10 marines total. (Came with Battle for Macragge.)
I'd suggest getting the following:
Commander box kit: gives you several options in creating your HQ leader
Razorback box set: pieces can be switched out to make either a Rhino or Razorback (don't glue the top where the turret mounts, or the front hatches where the storm bolter can mount), and kit includes 5 more tactical marines
Dreadnought kit (keep the stock assault cannon)
Devestator box set: if your opponents like to use armor/dreadnoughts
Landspeeder kit: a nice addition to any army
Tactical squad kit: another 10 marines to flesh out your army
This should be a good start to a solid space marine army. You should also check ebay to save some money. Have fun!
Could anyone help me out with strategies/an army list for my Ultramarine army. As mentioned above, I'll be facing Tau, Tyranids, and Eldar. Thanks again.
You're definitely going to want to have Tyrannic War Vets in games against the Tyranids. There are no models for them as of yet, so for the time being just use whatever models you wish to represent them.Originally posted by Hjtguy@Dec 3 2004, 22:45

Any other advice?
Get a librarian! If u can use the Fear of Darkness, then you can scare more powerful units away. Also, a devestator squad with Flamers will flame right through the tyranids.

Dev squads can have flamers? I must have missed that.
Librarians are quite good, but in small games chaplains can also be super effective.

I just started playing also, and I have found that the stock dreads can be very effective. I have only played Tau so far, but I have found that the key to victory against the Tau is use a squad of assault based people to take on the kroot. They can really slow you down, so you wanna take care of them, and they have pretty bad leadership, so it isn't too hard to take them down. Then, try to get some assault troops, like assault marines or bikes, into their lines of infantry. Tau are pretty horrible at close combat, and can be easily destroyed by marines. You need to watch out for broadsides and Hammerheads (the big suits and big tank), as they can really hurt your armor a lot. However, if you protect your armor with meat shield (ie marines) they will have too many targets to fire at, and will have a big problem dealing with you. However, I have never won (I think I quit too soon because I do not want to let my guys die).
Well, against nids, I am guessing you will want to have a good mix of close combat troops mixed in with heavy firepower. The cc troops will hold the nids off while you can use your heavy firepower to take down the abominations. With nids, I am thinking some heavy bolters and flamers would be a good investment.

Thanks alot for all the advice.
I think I have a fairly decent idea of how to handle the 'Nids, but I'm very afraid of the Tau, and unsure about the Eldar.
Anyone have any good strategies for the Tau, or some insight as to how to handle the Eldar in a 500-750 point battle?
Get an assult squad, try a 5 man squad and equip the vet. sgt with a pair of lightning claws. Upgrade 2 marines to have plasma pistols. This squad will own in close combat. Have a Chaplain lead the unit so you can re-roll failed hits. For this buy a box set of 5 assult marines, a Chaplain blister and make a bits order for:
- veteran space marine pair of lightning claws (these are new, not sure if you can order these yet)
- 1 jump pack (for Chaplain)
You need firepower. 10 man tactical squad, marine with plasma gun, marine with heavy bolter.
For your second troop choice, 6 man marine squad with lascannon.
This is approx 500 pts I think.
In order to deal with hoards and vehicles you need missle launchers. A 6-8 man squad with 3 missles.
Buy 3 tactical squads and you can make both tactical squads and the devastator squad. You will also need a heavy bolter blister pack as well as a lascannon blister pack. Plus you will have marines left over if you wish to add to your army later. You'll have to order the plasma gun as well.
Good thing X-mas is on the way, enjoy!
