Heh. I bet you're all thinking 'not another newbie with a horde of questions' or something similar but please bear with me will you?
A week ago i thought that i had everything planned out. Then i re-read the codex and got confused. There are only two people who uses guards at my local club and then only using the allies rule since their primary armies are Daemonhunters and Witchhunters so they have never played with a clean guard army.
Right now i only have 22 guardsmen (20 Cadian shocktroops box and 1 blisterpack with a plasma- and a meltagunner) and i'd like some advice on how to put together a minimum sized army, what upgrades to pick and so on. 3 of my freins have recently started playing aswell as witchhunters, tyranids and spacemarines. I'm going to be done with my army before them, i've already painted the ones i have while they haven't even opened their boxes.
Space marines are exellent at soaking up lasgun fire so i'll need a weapon that can pierce through their heavy armor as my special weapons, plasma- or meltagun right? The melta is reliable but don't have rapidfire and only 12" range. Plasmaweapons however have a chance of overheating, the more you shoot the bigger the chance so i don't know what weapon to use. I think flamers have a to short range to be effective and i don't know anything about the grenade launchers.
As for the heavy weapon, a heavy bolter seems like the best choice. Its cheap, fires long and often and i doubt i'll have the need of anti-veichle weaponary with our tiny armies.
Now on to the command squad, one officer and 4 guardsmen right? These guardsmen have a ton of upgrades to chose from and i'm not sure which would be of most use.
Now the HQ. Seems like most people agree on using the HSO, but what more? Where should i place my Master Vox Caster? Would putting him in the HQ allow all the squads in my army equipped with a regular vox to roll Ld test using the HSO's leadership or must i place the MVOX in the command squad where he would only affect that platoon or how does it work exactly? I did search the codex after some details about how vox works, but i might have missed it or it might not say.
Summary: How would you put together a minimum size army and what upgrades would you get for your troops?
By minimum size, do you mean you want an army with low amount of models, e.g. 50 models, or an army with low points cost, e.g. 500 points?
I'll answer both any way.
If you want a small, elite army then get doctrines like Allow Stormtroopers, Veterans, Grenadiers and get lots of tanks and sentinels.
Vs. Space Marines I'd get Plasma Guns, Lascannons and carapace armour. Stormtroopers, Command Squadrons and Hardened Veterans can have lots of plasma guns in their squads. Stormtroopers with meltaguns can deepstrike and hunt down tanks. Maybe invest in a Vanquisher Battle Tank but that would be in a 1500 point battle IMHO.
Vs. Tyranids I'd get Grenade Launchers/Flamers, Heavy Bolters and Commissars. Take more quantity over quality when fighting horde enemies. Commissars and JO with MVOX can do wonders in a infantry army, as well as provide a punch in CC if equipped with PF, however you ideally want them to be out of sight all game in a bunker. Hellhound is a great tank vs tyranids and a must have!
Witchhunters can be diverse and field multiploe tactics. Just plan an average army with a mixture of heavy and special weapons, plus a Leman Russ and Basilisk for heavy support.
"No single man should have the power to crush the lives of his people. It is our duty, being free from the cruel reign of the Emporer, to liberate the peoples of the Imperium from His iron grip! Let them choose their leader! Let them join the Confederation! Let us dethrone the false Emporer and unite under the banner of Freedom!" - Karl Lindbergh, President of the C.I.S., Speech on Justice VI
'The old lie; To die for your Emporer is a wonderful and glorious honour.'
you'll need 1 more box of cadian plastics and a chimera if you want a legal army.
that'll give you a 25 man platoon, 5 man command squad, and an armored fist squad (2troops &1HQ = minimum). just use sgt as officers and everyone else noram lasguns.
however, you'll WANT to get a HW box asap. and probably a 3rd box of cadian plastics, and 15 large bases. this will allow you to make 15 HW teams, which will be enough for now.
and then get a Leman Russ. then you'll have a good medium army.
as for the "kill the SM question". Missle Launchers and Plasmaguns are you best bet. however, it gets old fast just using the same guns, the fun of IG is usign lots of different guns (and lots of lasguns!.
command squads? keep them cheap and use them for Leadership. perhaps put a mortar in there (cause you wanna keep them out of LOS). i use Iron Disp, it's worth it. in small point games don't waste points on a HSO, just a JO w/ ID.
or if you really want, take a JO with HonorImp (same as HSO, but 5pts cheaper).
By minimum sized army, i meant the two troops and a HQ, together with the upgrades needed to take on other armies about the same size in points. I just want to start playing so i can learnt he rules as quickly as possible, get some experince with the game so i can decide myself what i should expand my army with. Sorry for not being to clear on this.
...but they way Castellan said it, it would seem that i had to make extra special weapon troops and switch them depending on what opponent i'm going to play. Lets assume i can't do that, then what weapons should i get? Plasmagun as special weapons to add a punch versus heacy armour opponents like marines and Heavy Bolters against tyranids and orks? What weapon would you choose if you didn't know what side your enemy plays? I want an army that isn't specialised in fighting any specific enemy, i want an army thats equally good against any side if you understand what i mean. 2 troops and a HQ that would work equally good against any side without any unit swapping or is that impossible?
My next purchase will be a HW platoon, but i want to know which HW's that would be the best for me before i assemble them - don't want to be standing there with some weapons i'm not going to have need of later on.
Back to the Vox question, do i need a Mvox in every command squad or just one in my HQ in order to give my regular squads leadership bonuses?
only the command squad can take Mvox.Originally posted by Kaiser@Dec 18 2004, 17:20
