People keep talking about allies, what are they and how can they be used, and when?

Allies are squads and/or vehicles that you take from a different army.

Example: You have 1000 points of Imperial Guard and 500 points of Space Marines.

You wish to play a 1500 point game.

You take you're main force from your Guard figures and then take 500 points of Space Marines as allies.

They fight as one army, but each retains it's particular characteristics and rules.

Thats the simple version, just to give you a straight forward, non-complicated answer.

    regards,

For the "legal" versions of allies, each codex/army that allows allies details which units may be used and how many of each. For example in the front of the Demon Hunters or Witch Hunters there is a section on how to use each army.

For the house version you can make up whatever rules you want. Take a legal 500 point marine army and attach it to your Guard army. Just make sure each army is a legally composed army. Of couse since it's house rules, you could do it any way you want.

Legal allies are Daemonhunter, Whitchhunter and Kroot mercenaries who are in their respective codex (Kroot mercenaries are in a chapter approved.) There might be others, but I can't remember any.

Your best bet is to read through a Demon Hunter (DH) or Witch Hunter (WH) codex next time you're in a GW store.

I wouldnt recommend the Kroot Mercenaries, but they can be found in the 2003 Chapter Approved.

The ally army needs to be a legal FOC army? As in, two troops and an HQ?

    No, it does not.

What Wolkin was describing was a House rule thing, where if your army is not large enough, sometimes people field two smaller armies to fill a point total.

Allies are units that can accompany your main force, and your main force must meet the 1 HQ and 2 Troop minimums.

My question was asked because I have this awesome idea for a hvy varient sential(check Conversion for the big picture) that would use dreanought weapons. I needed to fill an elite/fast attack spot to use it in. Or I wanted Wolf Scouts, or Jet pack blood claws. If anybody has any ideas for the IG army lacking these two then tell me please, other wise this topic is a waste.
