HI im new to warhammer 40k and i was wandering what is the best weapon for my commander, it has a chain sword, power claw/fist, another sword (not sure what). Thanks in advance.
What type of space marines do you play? What is the amount of points you play with? Do you have a command squad or escort for him? Do you want him to be shooty or cc? Do want him to be cheap or expensive?
My grand master leads my 2000 point army, and is quite pricy. It all depends on your preferences. He also leads two 8 man assault squads and has the following weapons:
Master-crafted lightning claws

Well most of my models havent even been put toeghether yet so i want to get the first 500 points out the way i have 1 tacticul squad 1 rhino an combat squad and the commander. The army ive chosen to paint them is blood angels but i really want the commander to get in close and cut threw most opposition with relative ease.
I would give him lightning claws, terminator honours, and bionics. Give him a jump pack later when you get an assault squad with jump packs. This keeps him cheap and powerful. When you reach larger games I would give him similar things that my current grand master has.
I am assuming you have the new commander box and all the weapons from there? For blood Angels I would say use a Bolt Pistol and the Power sword (thats the one thats not the chain sword) That will give him the extra attack in close combat and the Power Sword is a really good CCW. You may want to think about getting some assault marines to make him an honour guard (but give one of the jumppacks to the captain obviously)Originally posted by Ghazghkull thraka@Jan 9 2005, 16:57

If you were really thinking about BA's then you can easily convert the commander box to make a nice looking chaplain that can lead your army and death company . The only thing your missing is the Chaplains Special Power weapon / icon thing (forgot the name) That can be converted from bits in the box... (and some extras.) Teka the power sword arm, cut off the sword and find a "pole" like piece of plastic (banner pole or similar). Fix that to the hand / sword handle and then cut off the Eagle from the top of the captains banner and put that on the very top of your new weapon. If positioned right the results are pretty good.
Also is the gun with the strap hanging down a storm bolter if so is it the best ranged weapon to use?

Storm bolter (with the strap)
(A bolt Pistol is on the other spru)
The storm bolter is basically two bolters strapped together and is reasonably good
Combi Melta is a bolter with a one off melta hit, good for that one potshot at close range to a tank
Combi Plasma is like the combi melta but with a simgle plasma shot. IMHO the worst choice for a commander.
Plasma / Bolt Pistol, these two are the friends of the Blood Angels. You only get the +1 combat bonus if you have two-one handed weapons, so you will want your commanders to have pistols if you expect them to be in close combat a-lot.
Thanks, i recently bought a codex it just hasnt come through the post yet so i would know a lot more if i had it. Is a standard bolter a 2 handed weapon so you cant hold a bolter and a chainsword for example?
Also, the Power Fist which has the spikes sticking up from the fist (like a knuckleduster) is a Lightning Claw. In close combat you can re-roll any failed rolls to wound. so it will slice through most people with ease.
However, if you take a lightning claw, unless you have two of them, you cannot gain +1 attack for two close combat weapons. If you take the Lightning Claw then you should take either the storm bolter or combi-melta gun, as you wont gain an extra attack from having a pistol.
