Hello,

forgive my ignorance in asking these questions, but...

Could someone explain the army structure of the imperial guard to me, including, how many soldiers per sqaud? 10 or 20?
When it says you need two troops, does that mean two lot's of 20 or 10?
Why are Steel legion's sold in 10's and other factions in 20?

What are the steel legion like, and is a guide to painting them included in Codex armageddon?

Can you use steel legion, in non-armageddon themed games?

Thanks.

The Armageddon Codex is now considered obselete. The Steel Legion models are cool and you can use them as whatever you would like. In the back of your Imperial Guard Codex, there is an explanaition on "Doctrines", one of which is "Mechanized". Read that doctrine and take it if you wish to play a true Steel Legion type army.

Organizations are tough to explain, basicallly at the minimum for any army you need one HQ Choice and 2 Troops choices. Your codex is broken down into the different choice types (ie Troops, Fast Attack, Elite, etc...)

You usually need to take atleast one Infantry Platoon as a troops choice. A platoon is a 5 man Platoon Command Squad plus 2 - 5 ten man Squads. An entire platoon only counts as ONE troop choice.

So start by taking an infantry platoon, and for your second choice you can take another Inf. Platoon, an Armored Fist Squad (10 guys in a chimera transport), or a Conscript Platoon (20 - 50 new recruits that have lesser skills but are super cheap cannon fodder). You can field up to 6 troop choices in most games, though you usually wont have enough points for that many.

Other than that... oh, most 10 man Squads will have a Sgt. or other leader.

The HQ can be confusing at first, just read over it a million times. An IG HQ can get really big because its possible to attach a lot of squads to your main HQ Command Squad (Like Sentinel Squads, Fire Support Squads, Anti-tank Squads, etc) However, it all counts as a single HQ Choice if they're all attached!

Before an entries title in the codex, it usually lists how many of that unit you can take. Example, "0-1" Means you dont HAVE to take one of this type of unit, but you could take UP TO one but not more if you'd like.

Just remember to fill the basic needs of one HQ and atleast 2 troops and that overall you can have up to 6 troop choices, 3 fast attack choices, 3 Heavy Support choices, and 3 Elite choices.

You can make things complicated for yourself by taking strange doctrines, allies, and all kinds of weird stuff. In the beginning you may just want to stick to a simple HQ Command Squad, one Infantry Platoon and an Armored Fist Squad as your troop choices. Keep it simple while learning and go from there.

You both know you probably didn't get it the first time around

Needed = Black
Terrary = Grey

1 Infantry platoon
Command squad
Infantry Squad Infantry squad
Infantry Squad Infantry squad
Infantry Squad

A command squad has 5 men
an Infantry squad has 10 men
so basic Infantry platoon has 25-55 men, based on your choice

For every one Infantry platoon you can have
1 Armoured fist squad
-10 men one Chimera
1 Conscript squad
- 20-50 men 2-5 special weapons, 2-5 hvy weapon(one eaach for every 10 men)

That should sum it up pretty well
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)

Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces

"Don't worry private, we'll have you shooting straighter in no time"

Some other things you might like to know is the fact that steel legion models are out of production.

And when you deploy your platoon, you deploy the entire thing (all the squads) at once, not squad by squad. Same for reserves, you roll one dice for each platoon not squad. Although each squad can deploy separately to others, and can arrive differently from reserves (some come in from table edge while rest deepstrike, but deepstriking is a doctrine)

Also in the doctrines section when it says imperial guard infantry, it doesn't mean the regular use of infantry, it only includes specific units, check the writing in italics on the first page of doctrines.

"See, isn't it so much easy when you aim for those alien bastards? Rather than spraying in their general direction?"
