I want to start an Imperial Guard army but can't decide on which to choose. I think the Cadians are a bit boring although they look good and the Catachans have a bit more style, but I think the Catachan army is more limited as they are jungle fighters, and it's hard to explain what use a basilisk etc is in the jungle.

I know you've probably seen loads of these threads already, but some responses would be nice!

Maybe talk about which you get and why that would help me decide or maybe talk about some of the other regiments (e.g Mordian etc).

Thanks!

how bout do both, use catcahn legs and cadian body and arms and catachen heads and stuf, mix things around. it will cost alot but it would look crazy because every model would be considerd a conversion.

the catachans in my mind are nicer models, and i quite like the idea of rock hard men living vietnam style killing lots of things, the problem is the models they dont go together properly if you go for basic pose of guy pointing lasrifle, the lasrifle balances on his wrist, its just the mould casting, the same a s the landspeeder doesnt fit together properly.
so i would go for the cadians,
i wish they would release the mordians as they are my favourite IG regiment

I don't know, but i think Cadian are too much stereotipized (sp?)..tere'e there's the risk that they will become THE imperial guard..so i approve anyone who play a different ig army
P.S.my favourite guards are Valhallan (Y)

Cadians, if not for the fact they are better sculpted and cast models, then go for the fact that the jungle fighters doctrine really sucks.
Trust me, cadians won't cause you grief in the future and you can still use the cameoline doctrine on them.

personally i say used Cadian models. and then convert to your heart content.

you don't have to use them as "Cadians".

you can paint them any color, give them any fluff, any doctrines, and use them anyway you want.

why cadian plastic? cause it doesn't limit your conversions as much as the arnolds- i mean catachan.

but then if you're into the big WWE looking dudes... by all means

The things making me lean towards Catachans are that the Cadians are very boring looking, at a glance they all look alike, and are have their nice neat uniforms but no style or character. Also most IG players probably play Cadians now, and I want something different.
Problem with Catachans is as I said a lot of IG units don't suit jungle warfare - such as Basilisk's. They didn't even use tanks (or not many) in vietnam did they? (just for comparison.)

Any comments about how effective the Catachans if you make a force based on the Catachan codex?

I still haven't quite decided yet though.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

you better believe they used tanks in vietnam! and lots of artillary as well!!
granted in dense dense jungle tanks aren't the best... but vietnam isn't all jungle.

Codes: Catachan... i've never used it. but it's no longer legal granted if you ask a friend, i'm sure he'll say "ok, go ahead". but just be warned, it wont fly at offical tournies if that's your thing.

anything out of print isn't legal. there was a brief period after the new IGdex and before 4ed that Codex: Catachan was lega only if used entirely unto it self (as stated in the last 3ed IG faq). however now that 4ed is out, the faq is changed and codex Catachan is out of print and therefore illegal.

as for it's effectivness... as expected, they kick butt in jungles!

but if you want to use them now, it's the jungle fighter doctrine... which imo isn't that good

if you like the look of Catachan models, paint them up however you like, and just use cameleoline and perhaps some LightInfantry instead of jungle fighter.

I might avoid the difficult decision by choosing a regiment other than the Cadians or Catachans!
The Praetorian's, they look really good, they look like British empire soldiers of the Victorian era actually, if you've seen the movie Zulu, they look just like the British soldiers in that!
I like the idea of a well disciplined army. The Praetorian's arn't covered by the codex doctrines but I can just use them as normal guardsmen.

The Praetorian's have such character, they even have a muscian playing a trumpet!

But they are expensive and i'm not really sure. I might just wait and see if Gamesworkshop release any new models, maybe people could keep contacting and emailing GW and pressuring them to release Mordians, Valhallans and so on.
