Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok i will be starting city fight soon with my old IG stuff and was wondering what is the best way to use them in a city fight, like where to position troops, basilik, snipers, mortars and such.
Strategy usually depends on the terrain and board set up, and also the mission being played.
Some pros and cons of city fight may be helpful though:
+ Your opponent can only cannot sweeping advance into a new combat if he beats a squad or your guardsmen, this gives you some more time to rapid fire on him as he wont be moving from squad to squad chewing them up.
+You can split your squads in half, giving you more squads (more flexibility) but weaker squads) This can be useful, just be careful how you use it.
+Cityfight usually means lots of cover, so you will get a lot of saves that would normally just instantly kill guardsmen.
-Deploying is even more critical, as you dont want your squads stuck moving through difficult terrain instead of firing that heavy weapon.
+Mortars and Basilisks excel here. I usually place mine in a corner of the board behind a building, this way they cannot get to the rear or side armor and they have to send a squad into the middle of nowhere if they want to deal with it. Indirect fire is your friend.
-Many weapons that used to use a template to hit, now use your (not so hot) ballistic skill, and often will not hit as many models. (Roll for number hit, not cram as many as you can under a template)
+Everyone gets a chance to regroup, I dont remember the specifics off hand but this will probably be important if you get assaulted or take heavy casualties and fall back.
I havent played cityfight in awhile, Im sure some other people will post some helpful stuff. Good luck defending the Imperium.
