Ok so as you probably gathered from the title, I am haveing a bit of trouble deciding what to take as an HQ and how to equip them. I have an =][= and a cannoness model though they don't need to both be used. i'm looking for something that will be effective in a 400-1000 pt battle against mainly tau, Dark Eldar and necrons.
In my experiance with Necrons (which is a little more limited than Dark eldar or Tau) no hq is good. Their ability to deny both invulnerable and regular saves (with a really good necron lord), while still retaining a high strength makes most close combat fights fruitless for any Heroin or Inquisiter. At a long range, however, an inquisiter lord followed by some gun serviters and logisticans is quite nice.
Tau: I have faced a LOT of tau. A good cannoness with a Jump pack can lay waste to an indefinate number of firewarriors, as well as take on squads of battle suits all by herself. In addition to carrying her own weight, the cannoness takes a LOT of the fire power away from the rest of your army by tying up firewarriors and artillary in close combat.
Dark Eldar: I have use my Cannoness against Dark eldar the most, with marginall success. I have played against both good and bad dark eldar players, and their level of skill and luck makes a larger difference than any other armies HQ I have found. My best advice is that whichever HQ you take, give them a retinue of some kind. They tend to need the backup, because Dark eldar are extremely mobile and you never know WHATS going to be charging into assault with your HQ in the next turn.
