Right, some of you may think that I am being wayyy to petty, but ever since I got back into 40K one thing has been bothering me fluff-wise: the heavy weapon options the IG have.
Lascannons, Autocannons, Missile Launchers and Mortars are all really good heavy weapons and suit the IG style and background very well. The lascannon, although seemingly high-tech is simply a heavier version of the lasgun, the most dependable and easily maintained technology around(thereĀ“s a reason the lasgun is the basic troop weapon in the guard), the Autocannon, Missile Launcher and Mortar are all fairly primitive technology(20th century stuff). However, the Heavy Bolter is a larger version of the boltgun, a weapon that has ALWAYS been described in 40K fluff as being really rare and hallowed technology, reserved for the elite units of the Imperium and hand-crafted by master artisans.
Well, why is it then that the seemingly more complex, more difficult to maintain heavy bolter is freely handed out to the dogfaces in the IG??? And the massive amounts of precious bolt ammunition required? WouldnĀ“t that be better used supplied to the Marines, the Grey Knights or the SoB? Makes no sense fluff-wise.
Also, there is another heavy weapon that is a part of the las-family of weapon tech, the scatter laser or multilaser. But can you field that in an infantry HW platoon? Hell no. For some inexplicable reason the Munitorium has decreed that the multilaser be reserved for sentinels and Chimera turrets only. IĀ“d kill for multilaser HW platoons, if only because itĀ“s a cool gatling looking gun
Then thereĀ“s the heavy stubber, THE most primitive, easily manufactured, easily maintained support weapon around. Ideal for dumb, uneducated guardsmen to use right? And anyone who has leafed through the lost and the damned army list knows that itĀ“s actually a damn good weapon. But does the IG make use of it? Nope, only on the occasional vehicle pintle mount.
If only for the sake of internal consistency I think GW should drop the heavy bolter completely out of the IG range. The other weapons more than make up for it IMO.
Here's the simple answer: GW would have had to make a new heavy weapon for all the old regiments, and the majority of players who already have Hbolters would have to upgrade... They COULD have made multilasers into an additional heavy weapon, but it's to similar to bother :)
You could build multilasers for your guardsmen anyway and say they are Hbolters if you want the cool models.
I think I totally agree. There should also be an assault cannon and plasma cannon opition. However the hvy stubber is probably more of a special weapon.

LMAO Guardsmen operating Assault Cannons and Plasma Cannons? ROFL you have got to be kidding me, they wouldnt know where to point the things. First off the Assault Cannon is infact part of the "Boltor" family, so if your complaining bout having Heavy Boltors then Assault Cannons shouls be well out of reach. And as for "Plasma" weaponry the Guard shouldnt even know it exists, because it should be reserved for elite units such as SM who can use it effectivly without getting themselves killed.

I agree, assault cannons should remain outside the scope of the IG, at least the infantry regiments, I have no problem with ACĀ“s on Super-heavy tanks, special rare pattern Leman Russes and flyers.
Plasma weaponry I am sort of torn on. the plasma gun is almost indispensable to the IG for popping armour, and I can see it being issued to time-honored regiments like the Cadians for example, who need every edge they can get in order to hold the Cadian gate(a high-priority mission by any standards). Personally I donĀ“t field any plasma guns in my regiment, and if I ever do itĀ“ll only be one or two since they are supposed to be incredibly rare.
IĀ“d like it if GW gave the IG something a little more stable, a little less powerful that would still be AP 3. Maybe a sort of a light Antitank rifle capable of popping power armour, like a turbo-charged lasgun(I know I know, the hellgun is supposed to be that, but itĀ“s not really). Then we could stop fielding armies that look like they just raided the nearest forge world when it comes to plasma weaponry.
I'd kind of doubt that Imperial Guard wouldn't know plasma exsist becaused there is a Leman Russ with one, more powerful than the SM ones I might add.
Besides, Space Marines cook themselves just as easy as Imperial Guard.
But I could see things like Multi Lasers being left off the list because they'd overlap on the Heavy Bolter (although I like the Multilaser better), and the Assault cannon would be hard to have in Imperial Guard not due to rarity but due to constant ammunition jams, IG weapons would be used for long periods of time without exacting maintenance and would lock up, so troops would despise them. Although I could see some of the last examples of Reaper Autocannons sticking around in some Regiments, they use simpler ammunition and are harder to jam.
As for that idea of a Anti-Tank rifle, it could be a oversized Lasrifle, you can set the normal Lasrifle to seriously high power levels but it drains the power pack in one shot, have a chunky Lasrifle that uses entire power packs for one or two shots, make it enough to bring down SM's and such but not so nasty it could drop a tank or anything, it would certainly be something to make and would be a fun fluff idea if anything.
They should just come up with a grenade round, or RPG launcher that has the plasma gun stats.
I am the Aquila-Guerilla!
basilisk should be gone.. no way in heck should that thing A: be all by itself.. it ought to be in a battery and B: Said battery of basilisk should be roughly 4 km back from the front lines... not within shooting range of a heavy bolter on turn one.
Thats my biggest peave.. they shoulda ditched the basilisk and not the griffon. they got it bass ackwards
Hell no, I love basilisks too much for that. What do you have against the guards best tank anyway?
Besides, there'd be a bloody riot in every country, and I would be at the head of the lynch mob that's looking for the editor of the guard codex.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
I think it would have been very fluffy if the guard had some field artillery. Now, we have the mortars and the very heavy mobile artillery (you do know which one i'm refering to..) There should've been something in between. Like the ork zap guns.
any suggestions for the "missing weapon"?
