Which would you consider to be more effective? A squad of Dominions with 5 Storm Bolters, or a slightly smaller squad of Retributers with 4 Heavy Bolters?
Every man I meet is in some way my superior; and in that I can learn from him.

It sort of depends on what exactly you want. The heavy bolter is longer ranges, slightly stronger, and has a slightly better AP - however its a heavy weapon which means move OR fire. And assault after firing is right out.
The storm bolter is literally the same as firing a pair of bolters - making your group of 5 the equivalent of a ten sister squad. Since it is also an assault weapon, you may assault after firing it, unlike a regular sister and her bolter and the heavy bolter firing group.
The cost difference is nearly offset in that the Dominion squad will cost more merely for the storm bolters; the fact that they have to buy a transport is exactly the same as purchasing the heavy bolters for the Retributors. (If you use a Rhino it will cost significantly less - an immolator would cost a little more, again on top of the storm bolter cost.
I would say that if you want a fast and mobile force - or a force which can move and give covering fire to other squads - the Dominions would be a good choice. If you are opposing a force with high toughness and moderate armor saves, the Retributors might be a good choice - especially if the enemy has to come to you, or can't escape the stationary range of the heavy bolters.
i love bolters (only stormbolters and heavey)
if you want to be mobile like moving alot i'd say storm becase there assault weapons but they are like normal bolters but with a further range good for taking out troops like eldar orks dark eldar and nids becasue they a running towards you so you can run away and still shoot at them before they get to close and attack you so badly like turn your girls into minced meat heavy bolters are for killing things like tau and the other shootie armys because heavy bolts can kill tau like shooting fish in a barrel once there wounded the dead also alright against marines becasue you get a better change

I prefer stormbolters and the mobility they afford. Heavy bolters do have their uses but I find regular boltguns and stormbolters adequate to face off most threats.
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.

Heavy bolters, they are an excellent firing platform. You'd want to arm your dominions with flame throwers and an imagifer or meltaguns anyway.
Not to mention that along with divine guidance, 4 heavy bolters turn into 12 AP1 shots a turn at STR5. not too shabby for taking out highly armored units such as Terminators.Originally posted by idinos@Jan 23 2005, 069

Blood for the blood god!
well, they are not all AP1...only if you roll a 6 to wound... I would personally say 4 heavy bolters, b/c I dont like storm bolters. 5 storm bolters=10 shots, 4 heavy bolters=12 shots at better S and AP. plus you dont HAVE to be a transport for the retributer squads. Dominions with 4 flamers, a combi flamer in an immolater....very good at taking out large squads and small squads alike.
