I ask this question as I have had two really tough games recently which I both narrowly lost (winter war), the army was a 1000pts of all infiltrating scout army with a large scout sniper squad with HB 2xClose combat units, a Vindicator and Predator annihaltor (spelling?), with a chaplain on bike with 4 man retinue and HB attack bike.
Now as his whole army Infiltrated It became extremely easy for him to postion his squads out of my firing lanes as he was placing units down last and despite most of weapons covering most lanes he manged to find a way and depite my army packing out mostly AP4 weaponary he could avoid my mass firepower with ease forcing me to move squads.
Unfortunatley this guy will be playing at conflict Manchester with myself so I wouldn't mind a few tips on the above subject to avoid a repeat performance, my current list Is within the army list section 100pts Guard winter war/conflict.
Would light Infantry work at a 1000pts? Any succesfull experiences?
Many thanks,
P.S ALL conflict missions allow INFILTRATE, hence Light Infantry interest

It sounds like you have doctrines to spare, so you may want to take "Drop Troops" which will give you the option to deepstrike many of your units should you ever need to. This adds a lot of mobility and versitility, but also brings chance into play.

Ill try to take a look at your list later and see if I have any advice for you.

I thought I might try the following list at the weekend espeacilly as the new terrain
rules make our line of sight suck (see into terrain 6" see out 6", can't see all the way through terrain) also to try and combat the above scout list from hell.
I thought this list might do well espeacilly as all the missions will be playing infiltrate.
This is my first effort so please be nice all tips, hint's moans always welcome
P.S. I know this should be In the army list section hope you don't mind
Thanks,

imo, i wouldn't put both a HW and SW in your command squads. too much points for such a small unit.

personally i wouldn't put LI on *all* your units, just a few.

HW squads are obvious choices. and perhaps 1 platoon. but just use the rest of your guys as a fire base.

you don't want to set up all your men as infiltrators.

still set up a firebase normally. he'll start setting up his infiltrators to counter your firebase. however, then you can start setting up your infiltrators to counter him.

if you just both all infiltrate, then you don't gain any advantage. use the firebase to force him to adapt to your setup.

against scouts, the HB is awsome as is a Hellhound.

actually, the Hellhound would be AWSOME against scouts. no armor save OR cover save!!

as would a few deepstriking HeavyFlamer Sentinels

Ever thought about using Last Chancers?

EDIT: Crazy idea. Just to mess with him, why not give your Command HQ (or any command squad) an officer with a Macharian Cross and Light Infantry for the squad. The beauty of the M. Cross is that it kicks in even after infiltrators have deployed.

Then! Infiltrate this squad near any of your other infiltrating squads (or any of your squads for that matter). After deployment is done, you can move a squad of yours that is within 6 inches of the Officer w/ Cross up to a foot away!

The best part is, all of your officers can take crosses. Talk about messing up his plans! Before the turns even start...

You fight sneak with sneak.

I wouldnt do this as his sneak will beat your sneak into sneaky puss. I would take a couple of infiltrators however as this can really mess with the deployment of his infiltrators. Doublly so if you get to place first. However, if you try to fight him on his terms you will lose as it will eventually come to closs combat. And we know how well guard do in that area.

Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:

1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant

2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers

3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC

I was toying around with a 1000 point list trying to come up with something I thought would be effective. Heres some random thoughts:

Light Infantry on Fire Support Squads and Anti-Tank Squads; hopefully you can set up in cover and get some good rounds of shooting in.

Command Squads full of Vets (CCW/Laspistols) and an Officer with a cheap power weapon will make excellent counter-charge units in my opinion. Alternatively, vets w/ grenade launchers should be able to hit on 4s and kill on 2s. Not half bad.

I thought about playing a mechanized list, but its tough in 1000 points other than the initial surprise it would be for your oponent, doesn't really offer other advantages.

Dropping in some cheap sentinels. I doubt all of his squads can deal with armor, so there has to be a weak spot or two where a cheap Sentinel with a flamer can really muck up his plans.

Instead of the Bassie, you may want to take a battle tank and keep its "back to the wall" (aka a board edge) when you deploy.

You could take the Veterans Doctrine (like in your list now) and load up your elites with Vet Squads. They can infiltrate, hold a lot of weapons, and are fun to shoot.

Infiltrating Last Chancers. Nothing harrasses marines like spread out last chancer teams with their higher BS and weapons/gear versitility.

Just some brainstorming, good luck on the table.

Don't forget to keep your squads in base to base!

Sentinels hardly count as armor. Every basic weapon of every army in the game except Imperial Guard would be able to take them out.

Thanks for the replies very usefull,
Having looked at the list and taken In your comments I think I have managed to come up with an allround better list.
The list hopefully will do better against the scout army, If I was to make a list for just scouts I think a hellhound would be perfect but for a balanced list I don't think It's worth the points.
Having looked closely at heavy weapon teams I think they are limited having 'all your eggs In one basket' seems risky espeacilly as they are only six man squads with LD7 even If In cover It's dangerous, I'd rather split the weapons Into squads to have the ability to split fire choose different lanes last longer etc......
Sentinels yes they are fragile and risky espeacilly for 1000pts game, saying that I do take 4 at 1500pts there just fun to use
Looking at the Basilisk I think It's just too hard to fully hide and for the extra 30pts the lethal all rounder tank the Lehman Russ has decided to make an appearance .
Anyway back to the list all comments (good or bad) are welcome, remember I'm trying to get an all round list where all missions play infiltrators,
Many thanks,

Instead of taking a Heroic Senior Officer in your HQ, you can take a Junior Officer with Honorifica Imperialis. You get the same stats and save 5 points!

Wow, 5 points! But hey, thats an upgrade on your Leman Russ or some more gear for an officer.
