Tomorrow is my monthly trip up to GW to buy something new to paint.
I figured while I'm at it I should actually build up a small force to play 40k in 40 minutes or some such with the boys there on one of my trips
I have a Tac squad already, which came with the Battle for Macragge box set (which is amazing for anyone new by the way...just the condensed rule book is excellent) which I will use as a starting point.
I'm constructing my army based on "things that would look pretty on my desk" so bear with me.
Since I can't go with my ideal list I figured I'd start building up otherwise.
Librarian - They're quick the force to be reckoned with this time around + Their models are quite interesting...I just need to get better with fleshtones.
Scout Squad - ML+ Sniper rifles (5 scouts) - They're versitile little models, again...damn flesh tone...
Tac Squad + ML - 5 models (inc sarge)
Scout Squad - CCW's - Melee support
Tornado Class LandSpeeder - These for some reason look really good to me.. Packs quite the whallup too.
Just wondering if you guys feel this would be a good thing to build from. I think it hits a decent blend, but I'm very open to suggestions.
Hmm, well right off the bat, do you have a specific chapter in mind?
To many scouts in your list, either go for CCW wielding or Snipers.
Upgrade to two 5 man tac squads, one with a ML and the other, mabye a heavy bolter.
Librarians are cool, but I just love the Techpriest. Though this cannot be your HQ
so a librarian is your best bet, plus the models look good.
Tips on painting face:
Paint bestial brown
ink with flesh wash
highlight with dwarf flesh
final highlight elf flesh
paint eyes with a dot of white.
The Fallen are not Forgotten, and will be punished!
Hope this helps
Since I don't really see any huge bonus of the trait system when you don't have a particular army in mind, I'll probably stick with UltraMarines and their codex faithfulness.
Yeah, I love the UM color scheme and stuff. I know how you feel about the good looking business. but really it's the game that matters and you have to think tactically. Of course, most of the SMs still look pretty darn good!
Monthly trip? Is it far away? Also, because of the higher prices, I recommend eBay. Save at least 5-10 bucks, or at least on my experiences.
It's not particularly far away, I just try to limit my spending. I could blow 100 bucks in there within 5 minutes, so I tend to keep away for my own good ^^
For troops and what not I like GW because I can play with them a little more in a sense....For Vehicles I'll probably Ebay them because I don't want to pay close to 75 bucks for a landraider or some such.
i just started back in november with the battle for macragge set too.
i would suggest picking up a chaplain over the librarian. if you're going to be playing smaller games at first (which is what i'm doing too), i think you'll get more mileage out of the chaplain. much cheaper point cost for re-rolls on your assaults. you have to dig that. i know librarians are very attractive with their powers and all, but unless you plan on starting out playing 1500 point games, i think he'll just get shot a whole lot. stick a chaplain with a sgt. with terminator honours and some assault troops or even just a tac squad tooled for close combat and watch the carnage fly.
i also picked up some scout snipers. i misread their entry in the new codex the first time, but after the second time, i realized ANY scouts can replace the standard bolter for a small cost and get a sniper rifle. pretty handy in small point games when somebody shows up with a big nasty, but not so specialized that you feel like you wasted points if they don't.
i haven't picked up any vehicles yet, but the LS tornado would be my vehicle of choice at this point.
you might want to think about a dread. mine has served me well in these low point games i've been playing. they probably aren't much good against big stuff, but in the 500-750 point games i've been in so far, it rocks the body harder than anything else in my army. i drop pod him next to whatever is giving me trouble and let him go to town. i left the claw on him for that reason.
i've had a couple of people tell me that strategy counts more in these small games than at any other time, so be sure to use all kinds of legal dirty tricks to your advantage- deep strikes, drop pods, infiltration, etc.
of course, tac squads are my bread and butter. i
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
Whirlwinds! Castellans! Yeah, you know it, you posted in the Whirlwind tacticas! So go ahead, get em. Cheap points, great value. Of course, I bet you're getting it on eBay, it's 40 bucks. Watch out, don't get the crappy old one!
The crappy old ones were being sold 3 for 40 bucks at the GW auction...Pity I find them so ugly.
