Across the millions of worlds that constitute the Imperium of Man, the primary defence against any alien or heretical threat is the Imperial Guard. There can be no doubt the the Imperial Guard is the most vital element of Humanity's defence.
From the diverse worlds of the Imperium, (including Mordia, Catachan, Valhalla, Cadia, Tallarn, Armageddon, Krieg, Terrax, Tanith and many many more) uncounted millions of soldiers stand ready to crush the Emperor's enemies.
The Imperium is so vast that central control of it's widespread domains is practically impossible. Primate worlds have been established in far-flung sectors of the galaxy, ruled by the Ministorum, Adeptus Mechanicus or independent Imperial governors.
During times of invasion these garrison worlds have the duty to defend their sector from attack. There is no help from other garrison worlds as the distance between sectors is so large that warp communication is unreliable. Therefore each planet ruled by the garrison world has a PDF (planetary defence force) who keep the enemy at bay whilst Imperial Guard forces are dispatched.
For the Imperial governors loyalty to the Emperor, his domain will be guaranteed to be protected by the Imperial Guard, and in return the Imperial governor must pay for this protection in numbers of men. Men are drawn from PDFs to serve in Imperial Regiments, such as the Cadian 8th, that are usually 10,000 men strong.
These regiments are commanded by their own officers, from noble families of their home world. When dozens of Regiments are mustered then they are commanded by Lord General Militants appointed by the Departmento Munitorium, usually for their previous military service to the Imperium.
Imperial Guard's primary strength is through it's manpower and it's ability to be equipped with a wide range of powerful heavy weapons. It also has access to an impressive heavy support range, and are able to deploy more tanks than most armies. Imperial Guard can be said to be the most cost effective army to have. Their men are cheap and their tanks are cheap, and they still pack a punch similar to more expensive units. You can be guaranteed to have more men than the opponent and definitely more tanks. Man-on-man, your opponents will always defeat you, however the Imperial Guard works together to defeat the enemy and when a guardsman falls in battle two brave men fill his place in the defence line.
Imperial Guard are best at distance as they can obliterate a small army in two turns of shooting. As long as you hold the enemy at arm's length you will always out-shoot your opponent. It's holding the enemy at arm's length that is the problem though!
Concentrate fire on close combat squads, especially if they have increased movement due to jump packs, fleet of foot, etc.
Spread your squads apart so that if one gets over run you able able to shoot the enemy again after the combat has finished.
Imperial Guard are a great army to collect and the tactics I've described are only one of many different types of Imperial Guard armies you can have. With the new codex and doctrine rules it is possible to create any type of army that you wish.
As the Imperial Guard varies over the Imperium different tactics are used. Those regiments that come from jungle worlds, such as Catachan, are experts at setting traps and surviving in harsh dense jungles. They are able to use this terrain to their advantage, and whilst other Imperial guardsmen would be slowed down by the jungles, Catachan are adept at fighting in these tropical environments.
Regiments that fight in blizzard environments or worlds eclipsed in pitch black darkness, are trained to fight in close formation in hand-to-hand combat due to the reduced ability to see. They decimate the enemy with flame throwers and heavy bolters then use hundreds of conscripts to overwhelm the opponent with numbers when fighting. These warriors are adapt at fighting hand-to-hand and carry with them pistols and combat weapons instead of long-range lasguns.
Regiments from Forgeworlds have a direct access to a wide range of tanks. Armored Divisions, made up completely of tanks and fast-moving stormtroopers, use hammer-blow tactics to instantly incapacitate the enemy with continual artillery bombardments and tankshocks.

"No single man should have the power to crush the lives of his people. It is our duty, being free from the cruel reign of the Emporer, to liberate the peoples of the Imperium from His iron grip! Let them choose their leader! Let them join the Confederation! Let us dethrone the false Emporer and unite under the banner of Freedom!" - Karl Lindbergh, President of the C.I.S., Speech on Justice VI
'The old lie; To die for your Emporer is a wonderful and glorious honour.'
Due imperial guard because tyranids only have 6+ save and I 2. Even though they have weapons that are S10 AP4 36In. Range. Imperial guard has the heavy duty battle tanks that discinigrate anything in its path. The tanks of the imperium are the back bone of the imperial guard. Plus the imperial guard has very cheap models points wise.
imperial guard all they way, friend. superior numbers, tanks, heavy weapons, Demolishers (S 10 ORDNANCE 2"!!!!! just make sure u dont get into close quarters - it may be the last thing u ever do
