I've got a friend who is also going to start collecting 40k, and he's looking to me for advice as to what to collect (Not sure why, but whatever)
I said I'd ask you guys for some advice. We're looking for some fair games, so I dont want him to have the one army IG is guaranteed to own, but then again, I dont wanna get pwned.
Can you give me a general rundown as to what the IGs are good/bad against? As far as I can guess, they would shoot the hell out of orks, have a fairly good game against Tau, get beaten by nids, but I dont know the rest. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
I have playrd imperial gaurd for quite a while and have formed an army that preformrs reasnobly whell against everything. your frend should not play an army becayse it is fair against you but one that gives him his jollies to play. go into your local gameing shop and look through all the codexes and see which he likes and if you have enoughf models (and you play IG so you should) play a few proxy battles these are stupid but should give him an ide of whether he would like to play that arny.
Each army has its strength and weakness. Their are no bad armies only bad players(heheh). I started as space marines player and move to the IG army.
The IG strengths:
1) numbers(6pts a figure)
2) heavy wpns in squads
3) Leadership 9 or 10 from vox
4) If you give your officers ID then you can regroup below 50%
6) pie plates
7) Did I say tanks(lol)
2) s3 t3 i3 need I say more
3) Ws3 Bs 3 which is worst then line 1(hehe)
if he is starting to play i would recomend he looks at either Space marines or Chaos, in both cases it is entirely possible, if you know what you are doing you will wipe him fro mthe board, but not necesarrily, both are capable of doing the same to you
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Guard is not the easiest army to play, S3, T3, etc. We do have numbers and Heavy Weapons. If you like tanks, guard is the army for you. You may not win, but if you like tanks what can you do.
"A love for tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened nations in their hour of peril."

I find that the massive amount of Heavy Weapons available to IG is one of their main assets. Not to mention the best tank in the whole game: Leman Russ.
I personally do a calculation with every IG army that I make. For every 500 points of army list I allow myself one tank. This means that in 1500 points I take three tanks. However, I usually play 1850 points and I still only take 3 tanks because infantry are really the mainstay of any IG army.
Their weakness is that their statline isn't the best. it's completely average. However, this is also a GOOD thing. We don't have any models in our army with BS 2 or any models with TO 2, so even our "terrible" statline isn't all that bad.
I do agree with the other people who said that your opponent should find an army that suits his tastes rather than just take one that would be good against you. That will just lead to him becoming bored with the game rather quickly.
Err, conscripts?Originally posted by H0urg1ass@Feb 11 2005, 18:27

I see what you mean, you were talking about tbe BS. Oh well, it makes things simpler when fighting marines. Instead of having to roll 4,5 you just have to roll all 5's ^_^
Karnov let all of us fulfil our repressed dreams of being a fat Russian man running around in the great outdoors and getting shot at by weird stone heads and crap. You didn't have a repressed fantasy about doing such marvelous things? Well, I don't believe you . . . [djpretzel]
Ooops. Let me amend this: We don't have any models worth using that have BS 2 or TO 2. Sorry.Err, conscripts?
for the most part, IGs (like the rest of 40k) fate is determined by the general. however, imo, there are a few matchs that lean towards/against IG.
good for IG
1. foot slogging orks
2. static Tau
basically anything that's really slow
bad for IG
1. swarm Nids
2. Raider DE
4. Deamon Bomb
basically anything that's really fast
personally, the most exciting match up (imho) is IG vs IG.
i love it when two IG armies face off, they're usually very intense/close games . and you really see some action, even a good deal of CC!
and the best part is, two IG armies can be VERY VERY different.
