Well when I first got into WH 40k I was imediatley drawn to the look and fluff of the IG. So I bought the battle force and codex and started in on my minis. However I noticed that the IG take a lot of models and painting to make them look good. Not sure if I was up the challenge and really wanted to get into the game, I put my IG on hold and started to collect a Necron army because they are easy to paint and easy to learn with. So now that I am ready to come back to the Guard I wanted some opinions on what to get next for my Cadians. Currently I have the battle force (20 guard, 3 heavy weapons, and a leman russ). What should I get next? Another battleforce? An another box of troops and a command box? I am leaning toward another battleforce because I know that the troops are a mus,t the heavy weapons are always welcomed, and the IG could always use another Leman Russ but I am not sure any thoughts would be great!!!
Any peticular mission your trying to acheive? (Strike, Firepower, massed infantry...)
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
I would like to be some what balanced. I wouldn't mind a lot of infantry but I want plenty of hard hitting tanks as well. If it helps any my main opponents will be Necron, Tau, SM, and Nids. But I dont want to gear my list to any paticular army I want to be able to have a chance against most. Aside from a few small changes here and there to fit different races, I want my list to be well rounded.
For tanks, here is what I recommend:
Since you already have a Russ,
Next: Basilisk, very good in almost any game, I have found to be quite indespensable with its indirect fire. Very good against Tau and their Railguns.
After that: Demolisher, Very good for Deep striking Space Marines, and games where you have to advance to an Objective. They can take a lot of punishment. outfit it with Plasma Sponsons and Hull Lascannon.
Then: Hellhound. Much more effective tank than it used to be, with new rules. 24" will always hit something, lo cost points. Very effective against Tau, Nids and Eldar, even marines.
Then: Chimera: I have three, but I play Grenadiers. Need one for an Armoured fist squad, IMO guard need mobility for Objectives, Flanking etc.
Then: Another Russ: Maybe move this one up if you don't like the Demolisher idea. Very good overall marine/necron killer. Outfit with Hull HB and HB sponsons.
IMO: Make sure your army has 6 Lascannons. Must Have.
Cheers, Wellcome Back

I follow a formula that works fairly well for me: For ever whole 500 points in the army list take one tank.
In my 1850 point army I have three tanks. Usually I take two Leman Russ's and a Basilisk.
Also, another good thing to do is make sure that around 40+ percent of your army is troops choices. IG really suffer when there aren't enough lasguns on the table, so make sure that you have plenty of them.
Lastly, as another player said, take around 6 lascannons. However, don't make the common mistake of putting them in anti tank squads. Anti tanks squads are bad for two reasons. 1. If you kill a tank with the first lascannon you fire, then the other two shots are wasted as they cannot target other models. 2. They present a very easy target of destruction for your enemy. 6 models with a 5+ save aren't too difficult to kill.
So going with another battle force is not a bad idea?
Well, as the guys just said, leman russ may not be the best tank to get, but the battleforce does knock a hefty amount of $ off of the price, so if you want.Originally posted by CaptainClegg@Feb 16 2005, 04:29

An anti tank support squad is good, don't forget you need a HQ.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
more men. simple as that. you need to get 3 or 4 more boxes of troops.
that should keep you busy for a while
