ok this is one army i just experimented with for a 1500 pt battle:
    1 leman russ w/heavy bolter
    2 griffons
    1 command section with colonel
    3 lascannons
3 infantry platoons with 5 squads each totaling 55 men per platoon and 165 total plus the command section

I played againest a space wolf army and this is what i did:
deployed my LR on my left flank and my griffons behind cover on my right with the lascannons on the end with an infantry squad shielding them
in the center i deployed 2 INF platoons most of them in a 5x2 formation across with one squad spread out 1x10 in order to absorb the hits on the first turn
what happens basically is that they assault one squad, which using the guard motto is basically bait then once they bascially kill them off or they flee in one turn the assault force must consolidate, which then leaves them with in firing range of 4 squads with rapidfire (80 shots), and 6 or so squads on single fire (~60 shots) so as they consolidate into your next line you have enough fire power to level them even with 3+ or 2+ saves (150 shots will do that for ya) the only trouble i had with this tactic was that my flank was attacked by one marine squad and 2 bike squads which took my lascannons out of action fast so ... do you have any suggestions on how to keep my lascannons (in the army, i can keep them alive next time) and take out the bikes? and prevent a prolonged assault on the terminator squad?

Trade in one of your Griffons for a Leman Russ or a Demolisher to gaurd your right flank next time. And if you feel like it trade in your other Griffon for a Bassilisk.

that would put me in way over the limit, i would have to trade both griffons (150pts) for a basic leman russ (145pts) which i kinda normally use for its ordance anyway, oh btw is there anyway for a guard unit to kill a rhino in hth, my opponent tried to tank shock me but i held and assaulted him with 5 men so that he couldnt use it the rest of the game

To kill a Rhino in close combat you should buy melta-bombs for your Veteren Sgt. they only cost 5 points. For the Griffon thing, why would you rather have two griffons then two Leman Russ's?

i already had 1 Leman Russ and 2 griffons which was 3 ordance blasts per turn, if i take two Leman Russ tanks i would only get two heavy ordance blasts albiet it would have a much better armour value

The Leman Russ has a more powerful weapon, which means better chance of killing them, and better armour, which means better survivablity rate. The Griffon's weapon is always geuss-range and is perferably used in Cityfights.

i have decided to scrap one infantry platoon and take a leman russ with heavy bolters and lascannon, a demolisher with plasma and HB and a vanquisher with HBs plus meltas and missile launchers for my other squads
