I've played against tyranids twice, but never won. I know all the things like "kill the synapse","shoot, shoot and shoot", but what else can I do? And is this guy equipped for the wrong job? He's my only Hope:
Chapter Master Plagosus Maximus Carnifex
Master with Artificer Armour, Master-Crafted Thunder Hammer, Plasma Pistol, Combat Shield, Terminator Honours, Bionics, Jump Pack.
He's going to be attached to my Assault squad, and going to-to-claw with guys like the Carnifexes and the Tyrants. Is this a bit of an overkill, or completely misdirected? Please help!

May I suggest something slightly more efficient for killing monstrous creatures?
Epistolary, Terminator Honours, Master Crafted Force Weapon, Familiar, Bolt Pistol (for+1 attack), (Jump pack if you wish).
This way he goes first with 6 attacks (due to intiative 6 with familiar), only has to wound once (with a re-roll for misses) and then makes a leadership test on 10 (= a dead hive hive tyrant).
An invulnerable save probably would be self defeating, as your hope comes from killing the monstrous creature BEFORE he gets attacked back, but sure throw on on him if you want. I wouldn't bother with paying points for extra psychic powers seeing as if you used them you can't use th force weapon.
With your guy going last (Thunderhammer I1), hes only ever going to get squashed by a Carnifex et al. Bionics is pointless as they don't function against attacks where you dont get a save (monstrous creatures).
Really though, against Tyranids if your counting on going into CC your doing something wrong. You wants LOTS of shooty, whirlwinds, 4 heavy bolter devastator squads, the lot. With the Tyranids not having tanks, just take your normal complement of missile launchers/lascannon (not missile launchers if he has extended carapace, they wont cut it) and give them only one target every turn, the monstrous creatures. My favourite tactic is to take a plasma rifle in every tac squad, and then when shooting at the monstrous creatures the do a wound in all probablity if they hit.
Er....I was told you can't use psyker powers when you charge into CC...But I could be very wrong.
Regardless : big things fall to forcewepons. All the wounds and toughness in the world won't help you when you get smacked upside the head via librarian.
add flamers and heavy bolters. those nid numbers can really hurt. and they hold u up and beat you a little till the big ones come and get you. i usally send normal troops with a power fist to fight tyrants and carnifexes. and i always seem to get them with one squad. but i play orks with 20 man squads lol
Gundamfan pointed it out, I'll do it again: This has been previously discussed. Since this board has a search function, please use it. Thank You! (Y)
The same link Gundamfan posted, again, with a bit more informative header:
SM Vs. Tyranids
Not only does it contain information on the subject, it also contains a link to an even earlier thread on the subject!
Addoran already proved why Your over-expensive HQ model won't be worth much against Tyranids... If You're in CC, something has already gone horribly wrong for You. In most cases, only the Librarian has any real chance of killing a Tyranid Monstrous Creature in CC, and even that should not be the primary means... Priority is to shoot the 'Nids to death, and the previous topics should enlighten You on the issue of prioritizing Tyranid targets.
If You must deal with TMCs in CC, then use VetSgts with PFists in Your normal units... Thanks to the "Hidden Fist" technique, You can inflict wounds on the TMC, while any wounds caused back can usually be removed from other models in the unit. Just be sure that You do not place the VetSgt in BtB contact with the TMC!
And do not bother with Flamers... The previous discussions should reveal why Flamers aren't quite such a "hot" idea against Tyranids!
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
YOu should not be in cc. Shoot monstrous boys with anything that is made for tank killing. Dont take flamers, its easy for nids to get to you before your even in range. The only thing that might have a chance against a TMC is, like what every1 said, a librarian. But if the nid player is being smart, you will get gaunt ***** first, or genestealers, so it won't really matter. O well.. Poor you.
Back from a long adventure.
Ok, I just heard that if you're in assault range and so are they, it's best to charge 'em for the extra attack.Originally posted by Addoran@Feb 21 2005, 17:26

I could have sworn bionics worked on weapons that didnt allow saves... :hmm: but maybe thats just the Bionics in the Deamonhunters codex... and why go for a librarian if your trying to tool something to kill a tyrant when you can go GKGM...
Last i read, hes playing with a space marine army, not a demonhunters one?
The Holy Bolter
998. model bolter: Godwyn pattern with ammo counter, sinister/dexter lock mechanism and sickle magazine with 30 rounds of .75 calibre bolts with diamantine tips, depleted deuterium core & mass reactive detonators. Fires in 4 round bursts.
"A bolter is a treasured weapon; but in the hands of a Space Marine it is a divine instrument of the Emperor's wrath"
