I've searched for similar threads on this subject but have not found one. I vaguely remember it being mentioned some time ago but I can't dig it up so I'll ask again.
Be swift as the wind allows bikes to be taken as Elite and/or troops. However, the trait does not specify that Bikes can still be taken as Fast Attack options which seems, at a glance, rather odd.
The similar trait applying to Assault troops does specify that they may be taken as Elite or Fast attack.
Therefore, as I read it, Bikes may be taken as Elite and Troops but not as Fast Attack. Could somebody please confirm that this is correct?
It states that you may[I][U] take bikes as Elites or troops choices. So I think you can take them as fast attack still...Not sure though. :hmm:
I was under the impretion that they did that to support the White Scar's players. That trait would let you build an all bike company.

I think they are laying the groundwork for a Ravenwing portion of a new DA codex that will use the standardized talents.

There was no supporting of white scars. There was only bending over tables and mass genocide of sphincters.
But yes, the traight does allow you to field an all bike army.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
The reason I asked this question is because under the Assault troop entry (which as we all know are Fast Attack) is says may be taken as Elite.... and/or Fast Attack.
Under the Bike Squad entry (which are also Fast Attack, obviously) it says may be taken as Elite and/or troops.
I wonder why, under the Assult Squad trait it stipulates that they may still be used as Fast Attack and yet it doesnt't make the same distinction when referring to the Bike Squad trait.
Without wishing to stretch the point too far, it seems as if they are saying (with reference to Assault troops) "You may take them as Elite. Oh, and by the way, you can still take them as Fast Attack too".
Whereas with Bikes it appears to be saying "You may take them as Elite and you may take them as Troops" and nothing more.
It is the particular reference to and/or Fast Attack under the Assault trait that in my mind draws a distinction between the two phrases and makes them mean different things.
Of course, I'm not disagreeing with any of you, in fact I'm hoping you're all right, but I can't help feeling there is a difference.

Why in the world would you think a sentence that says you may take them as elite/troop in any way implies you can no longer take them as FA? There is absolutely no prohibition on taking bikes as FA as well as Elite and troops. The whole point is so you CAN create a White Scars or Ravenwing style army.Originally posted by samurai_socks+Feb 24 2005, 21:59--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(samurai_socks @ Feb 24 2005, 21:59)</div><div class='quotemain'>That is how i read it, that you give up your fast attack slots to allow you to take them as both elites and troops.

They use different people to write different sections of the rules and obviously don't hire anyone to ensure consistency. They can't even use the same terms for the same rules throughout their books. They are inconsistent, contradictory, and overall very poorly written. Too bad they have such a wide spread hold on the tabletop war-game community.
Thanks for the replies, they've helped a lot.
Now I have a further question (I hope it gets read, as I didn't want to start another 'Swift As The Wind' thread)....
Where the trait says Bike Squads may be used as Elite/Troops, does this refer to standard Bike Squads or to Scout Bike and Attack Bike squads too?
I'm thinking it would be good to use Bike Squads as Troops, Attack Bikes and/or Scout Bikes as Elite and Land Speeders as Fast Attack. Maybe combine this with 'Heed The Wisdom' and use Dreads as Heavy Support.
However, I'm not clear as to whether the term 'Bike Squad' is specific or broad.
