I am soon going to be starting my ultramarine army mainly thanks to undeadair's gallery.
and was wondering if Calger is as good as he sounds/looks?
also I keep hearing something about new marines but I havent seen any anywhere so should I wait until the new marines have been released? thanks (Y)
Well, sorry nobody has replied to you after 2 days but I guess it's down to the fact that many people find the Ultramarines just a little too 'ordinary', the epitomy of a 'bog-standard' Marine Chapter.
However, looking at Calgar's stats I'd say he's a pretty tasty guy with a Master Crafted Powerfist and what is in effect a Storm Bolter. Hmmmm.. a Master Crafted Powerfist...... Yes, I like that!
As for the new Marine figures, I wouldn't wait. When the new ones are finally released they will fit in perfectly with the older ones, and from what I've seen it's mainly the accessories that are improved, the differences between the old and new Marines themselves are barely noticable. Marines have been stood in that semi-rigid stance since 40k began and they will continue to stand that way for years to come
Terminator Based Custom Chapter
Hes an OK special charecter, I mean mine (Azrael) doesnt even have a 2+ save let alone an invulnerable.
Calgar can in effect make a squad fearless, though so can a Chaplain, and they re-roll everything so 2 master crafted fists isn't so good. N stormbolter will kill(at bs5) one space marine every 3.6 tries not too brilliant.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Calgar with an hounor guard can be a very effective unit. And Calgar is an AWSOME model.
Supporter in the Eternal War Against.......Nothing!
Having terminators with the double fists and bolters attached would be an awesome conversion. As for Calgar, I find him way to costly for what he does. If you want something similar, try this:
Master of Sanctity
He's only 160 points, has a fist and power weapon, gives his squad the re-rolls, and can get movement upgrade wargear.

The main advantage that Calgar (or any other space marine commander, especially a chapter master) has over a Chaplain (the suggested alternative) is that he has the Rights of Battle ability, which effectively gives every squad in your army Leadership 10. That is awesomely powerful. (in my opinion, worth much more than the Chaplain's Litany of Hate ability, though that is nice, too)
In Calgar's case specifically, his Pure of Heart, Strong of Body (or whatever it's called) ability is really far superiour to a Chaplain's ability to make his squad fearless. First off, it means that, like a fearless squad, his squad will never fall back or break from combat. However, unlike a fearless squad, his squad will never have to take additional wounds from losing comba and beingn outnumbered.
In short, Calgar is definitely worth his points. If you calculate it, you'll find that you're not really paying any more than a Chapter Master with similar equipment. That means you're basically getting an extra wound and his neat little special ability for free. He's probably not my ideal chapter master, but he's extraordinarily cool, and certainly worth his points.
