I'm going to start playing 40k and I have really taken a liking to IG. I want to buy just a small army but don't really know what to get. I have 90 bucks to spend on models and paint. I was thinking about buying a box of plastic cadians, a box of cadian officers, some cadian special weapons, and maybe a sentinel later on. I was wandering if I could make a decent army list with these models. It doesn't matter wether I win or not with them, just have fun.
I'd go with another box of troops before a sentinal. Troops is what the imperial guard is all about
does a grenade launcher and flamer come in the cadian plastic boxed set?
and also what would I need to buy if I only wanted one heavy weapons team?
yes you get plenty of nade launchers and flamers.Originally posted by Killa_Kadoog@Mar 7 2005, 23:49

if you want a legal army, you're going to need this as the minimum (barring grenadiers).
2 boxes of troops
this will give you enough for 1HQ and 2TROOPS.
5man command squad
10man armored fist
you don't need to buy officers, just convert one of your plastic troops to be an officer (paint him a lil different).
however, i also HIGHLY suggest you buy a box of heavyweapons! they're *essential*.
and if you buy 12 extra large HWbases, and another box of troops, you can make 15 heavyweapons from the one heavyweapon box (with some converting skill)
throw in a LemanRuss for luck, and you got a pretty decent starting IG force
welcome to the Guard.
a command squad and a box of cadians will give you a minimum required force and in the Uk will cost you i think its 35 pounds which roughly is about 60 bucks (1.75 dollars to UK sterling)
Troops are your best weapons in an IG points allowing you can have 30 ten man squads in a mission chart plus command squads. Thats 330 men. And thirty heavy weapons options. hee hee.
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
Welcome to 40K.One thing...when you play an IG army you need lots of guardsmen. So i would get a command squad 2 boxes of cadians(skip the sentinel for now). After that i might buy a heavy weapons squad or another box of cadians
Space Wolves 12-1
Wood Elves 1-2
may i strongly reccomend the cadian box set, it costs £50, i think thats around $95
leman russ- essential tank back up
3 heavy weapons squads- which can be made farely easily into 6 or 9 heavey weapons
thats £55 worth of stuff for £50, so you make a saving.
then you buy another box set of cadians and a chimera (33)
you then assemlbe this £83 of modles into-
5 man command squad with flamers or grenade launchers and a missile launcher
platoon commnad squad with flamers/grenade launchers and missile launcher
leman rus battle tank
fire support team with 3 lascannons
2 squads with flamer or grenade laucnher and missile laucnher/heavey bolter
1 squad with heavy bolter, auto cannon or what not, in a chimera
thats way above your budget, but start with the battle ofre and get the extra men and chimera when you can afford it, eventually you will have a perfect core army thats ready to biuld on, with armoured support, lots of heavey weapons, and a mobile element.
mix the kneeling legs from the heavy weapon sprues int oyour squads, using standing legs for the HW teams loader
- DONT use the big bases that come with the HW's ask your local gamers for spare small bases to use instead.
attach the heavey bolter to the missile laucnhers bipod, and give the missile launcher to a standing guy
Thanks for all the info, I think I will buy 2 boxes of troops and an officer blister pack and convert some gaurdsmen for the command squad. Do ya'll think it would be good to put and special weapons in my command squad.
also, would it be a disadvantage if I didn't use any regimental doctrines?
No, I just kid. Cadians are cool too. But, yes, troopers are your friends, as are heavy weapons. Not to mention tanks...
About Doctrines... I would suggest Iron Discipline and Sharpshooters. Depending on your terrain, you could also try Light Infantry and/or Cameleoline. If you want lots of scary squads running around, you could also take Grenadiers, Restricted Troops: Stormtroopers, Restricted Troops: Special Weapons Squads, or the one that allows you more Veterans. And don't forget, Drop Troops and Close Order Drill are free, free, free, absolutely FREE!
Vanilla Guard are also competetive, however. You spend less points, which allows for more men, weapons and tanks. They also are more flexible, allowing for the whole spectrum of the Guard's power.
In any case, I hope you are soon killing off the decadents in the name of the Imperium!
What exactly is the Vanilla Gaurd?
