I was considering using a Rune Priest in termie armor and lightning claws plus a
wolf guard of 4 termies:
2 with assault cannons / powerfist
2 with paired lightning claws
Am I spreading the function of them too thin buy mixing and taking melee and cannons or would they be effective? Rune priest would provide a cover save if someone brought AP 2 weapons down on them (since he melee onlyt he will cast it every shooting phase)
I putting this squad together if my LRC turns out to be just too much of a rolling coffin / point sink and since the models are somewhat expensive I was hoping to get some opinions....
The rest of the 2000 pt army is:
Wolf Lord with 9 blood claws / rhino
Venerable dreadnaught / drop pod
5 wolf scouts
Wolf Guard and 8 Grey Hunter / drop pod
Wolf Guard Battle Leader with 14 blood claws and a vindicator
Without the LRC I may break up the 14 blood claws (I don't like foot slogging too much) to get a rhino and max the scouts

I like combinations such as the one you stated above, because it makes the unit multi target capable, as long as they survive intact, if you start losing them then you have hindered yourself my not having a shooty CC termi.
I have an RP in termie armour armed with a force axe and a lightning claw - reason being he can storm call every turn if i choose to, and i don't have the hindrance of choosing to shoot or not.
I put the RP with 4 out of the following:
2 WGBG in TA with assault cannons, one with chainfist the other with powerfist
2 WGBG in TA with Storm Bolter, one with chainfist the other with powerfist
1 WGBG in TA with pair of lightning claws
1 WGBG in TA with thunder hammer and storm shield.
If i have the points free in my army i take the RP and all 6 terminators and put them in my LRC, but more often than not points dictate a minimum WGBG and they footslog it up the field, normally alongside the ven dred - just make sure of spacing.
This way if i'm in CC i will lose AC's first, if i'm footslogging i will lose CC's first. But i generally back them up with some vehicle, whether it be a LRC, LS Tornado or Ven dred - fire magnets can be useful as a distraction.
Gotta love possible rending shots, 8 from termies, 4 from Ven Dred, 4 with 4 possible re-rolls from LRC and 4 from LS Tornado - totaling 20 possible rending shots, all from one side of the table if i so choose.
