I've pretty much set my heart on a squad or two of Hardened veterans, but i want them to look different from the rest of my cadian army.
I feel either some nifty paintwork or modelling should be done ...
Does anyone have any ideas for how to make my veterans look veterany? The only idea I have so far is to stick so much extra equipment (grenades and such have you) to them as possible and then try to paint them dirty. How do i paint IG dirty though?
Ideas, suggestions, comments and money welcome.
you can take a modeling knife and make little bullet dents in their armor. Just hold the part of the model you want marked perpendicular to the tip of the blade and wiggle it around. Also you can cut slashes into their armor. Rip their cloths a bit buy just cutting gouges in their arms and painting it skin colored rather than the normal armor. Maybe add a little blood. I always like giving my vets face paint, to represent a fury inside them. Try that if it works with your color scheme.
Like it! I'll give those ideas a try
Having all or a mix of catachan heads helps, although you need to cut and model the neck area a bit.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
yeah catchan heads are the go also maybe some catchan arms?
also add special equipment ie uniqui trophys idividual vets have picked up, such a bolt pistol, a skull on the belt, or a ork jaw bone. for example on of my vets has a cut down las carbine as well a his shotgun.
this is unusual becuase no one in my army has las guns (auto rifles for the rank and file)
check the modeling forum for pics of my WIP veteran squad
i used primarly cadian plastics (w/ ample battle damage), but also used various catachan peices provided by a catachan heavy weapon team sprue
i also gave all ten members of the squad a heavy weapon team back pack (since they stay out in the field alot "infiltrate").
and also gave a variety of weapons:
bolt pistol powerfist (from SM command squad)
grenade launcher in one hand
missle launcher (catachan HW box)
meltagun (from SM command sprue)
two pistols (count as shotgun)
boltgun (count as GL)
laspistol ccw (catachan long knife)
and TONS of bitz. pistols, grenades, ammo, knives, etc etc
i find that if you make them too uniform, they end up looking not as unique as you'd want them. so really strive to make each model have a character of his own.
I've done that too. Cadian pieces combined with catachan arms, torso's, weapons.. I got from a friend. There are some good bits the HW and tank spruces. I've had a veteran with a heavy stubber (which I've been forced to replace for a tourney, sadly enough)
Anyway, try to give them that 'nonchalance'. Like they don't care at all what is happening.
(oh : the sentinel comes with a head with a sigarette in his mouth, hint! )
Check out my gallery, the pictures are alittle fuzzy but the veterans look different from the rest of my army
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
converted special weapons are always good, my vets plasma guns are made from lasguns and plasma pistols. It turned out so well I'm thinking of making all my plasma guns like that from now on. I also think that the kneeling legs from the heavy weapons teams give them a good look.

I came, I saw, I got a different type of Leman Russ.
