I'm thiking of making a tournament marine army. i've been wanting to start marines since the new codex came out and figure now is as good a time as any. I have list made that I really like. I'm using an all bike army (be swift as the wind). Could an all bike army be competative? The other section of scoring i'm not sure about is army composition.
All of my trrops could also be taken as FA, would this be a good idea, and how many units should I move? Also is it bad to have a lot of identicle units (my OCD says I have to make my army look nice)?
As to your army, your best bet it to post it in the army lists section and we will go over it there. Yes, bike armnies can be effective but they take a fine hand as you will inevitablly be outnumbered.
Your best bet for composition is to keep everything as even as possible. However, for this list, since they are interchangeable, I doubt anyone would give you a problem.
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
If you don't want all you models identical, convert! Convert convert convert! It's as easy as adding something to the bike, or swapping an arm. Or you could get into reworking, like the White Scars chopper in the old SM codex. Tactically you have to avoid taking casualties at all costs. Some armies, like Orks, you can lose a few guys and still win easily. But with an all bike army... As Black Templars I get uber-bike squads, and my favorite tactic with my Bikers is to zoom up 12" away from one of their smaller squads and open up. If you had two or even three squads at the same time, although you're horribly vulnerable to pie plates you could really "dice" bigger squads. Remember to have a squad with plenty of meltas for those tanks!
I didn't mean identicle models I meant identicle units as in the compsition of the unit. I do have a good mix of both melta guns and melta bombs.
