I hear a lot of people saying extra armour is important for battle tanks, and most people include it on their army list. Thing is, it doesn't seem all that usefull to me, my tanks don't normally do much moving anyway.
Does everyone ehre think it's really that great?
Well it does, EA gives you obvious advantages for a vehicle carrying assult troops, unless ,as with a mechanised force you have so many that it is less important.
But for battle tanks, well in the real world manouveraility counts, but in 40K some people like to use their MBTs to move and fire, allowing them to keep out of line of sight of tank hunting units whilst they rip their targets appart, this approach carries its own rewards (obviously) but also its own problems - you spend time moving when you should be shooting, your oppnent can also get out of your way and it can go horribly wrong. But perhaps the more important use of EA is this: If you hit my tank and the result is it cant move or shoot, then it is just gonna sit there and give you a second go, if however, I can move because I bought extra armour, I can back it round the corner of the building I deployed it next to, you cant shoot it next turn and do not get a second bite of the cherry.
So it depends, on how you use your tanks and on the scnery and lines of fire avaiable. But if there is a chance it can save your battle tank, isnt it worth that meager cost?
I use EA for my Chimeras when I know I am going to be moving them. I would also use it on an aggressive tank like a Hellhound or Demolisher. I would not use it on anything that sits back and shoots.
EA is especially good when you have vehicle that blows smoke. You are much more likely to be able to use it.
Smoke Launcher are more important, but after that EA is good. Most other vehicle upgrades other than guns, are generally not worth the points IMO.

Well said Chered, I totally agree. In my experience, the most useful application is removing tanks from potential lines of fire. If they are stunned, they won't be firing anyways. This allows you to extricate them to a more safe spot to wait and calm down.
However in a list if you are short of points, IMO one of the first fat trimmings is EA.
On my battle tank, it can't shoot and its basically useless. Come on we use Leman Russ for the main reason of big god damn cannon.
If it can't shoot, you have a very tough piece of metal.
12" movement (think thats the max unless on a road) might help you a bit. But if it really means the difference in a list. Go for more heavy weapons.
Always worth it.
**Sorry about the jumbled post, thoughts a bit irratic atm. Long post in a while too!**

When I say jump you don't ask me 'How high?' maggot! You jump!
i've stopeed using XA. it just got to be too many points for too little return. yes its nice to be able to still move your chimera/Russ etc. however, imo it's not worth the price tag (even if it's a small price tag).
XA on Chimera. this is the obvious usage for XA. to keep your transport moving and what not. however, IG transports are not assault transports. XA is good for Rhinos (for those who still use Rhinos), but Chimeras are more akin to light tanks that can also move troops. if a chimera gets delayed for a turn, it shouldn't hurt you that much. you want to keep the already pricey chimera as cheap as possible.
XA of MBT. the only purpose of this is to be able to move after you've been hit in order to get out of LOS to tank hunting units. again, the XA is nice, but not worth the price imo. the amount of times it comes in handy does not warrent the investment imo.
i'd rather upgrade a HeavyBolter to a Missle Launcher.
put Iron Disp on my Officer
or just save 2 points and buy smoke instead.
and as for having "a few points left over and no where to spend them." personally that never happens to me, i'm always trying to trim down to the point limit
XA is a waste for a non-transport vehicle.
Chimera (IG Equiv?) or Rhino(SM)/Smoke Launchers/Extra Armor is a good combo to make sure the vehicle keeps moving. Wouldn't waste the points on something that is intended to shoot, as any glance will stop it from doing that regardless of XA.

I think boxant said somewhile ago, never buy a chimera that costs more than 100 pts. And been following his advice ever since, never get to use the benefit of the XA, except as said on my demolisher and hellhound, there it's quite important to have XA.
I do not used EA. I prefer to spend the points on a Hvy Stubbers for my chimera's and hellhounds. It will give me more firepower( extra 3 shots at 36 inches of range). For example my chimera's moves 6 and has 9 shots at 36 inches(multilaser, hvy bolter and hvy stubber) that can chew up some infantry. That is better than EA in my view.
My cost is still under 100 on chimera(97pts).

yeah 100pts is my limit. infact my stock standard layout is the MLas/Hbolt/Hstub/Smoke for 100pts.
i like the HS simply because it's 3shots at 36". and the smoke can be very useful on a chimera (due to its poor armor). but if i need 3pts the smoke often gets the axe.
