With the new terminators coming out soon (I can pick mine up on monday) the old terminators are very low in price atm. It's a wonderful thing...Thusly I started up a DeathWing army until I can find a more cost effective way to get bikes ^^.
I have a few questions though :
I'm going for traditional deathWing (as the clerks at the store have said they've never seen/played against one before) and as such I'm using primarily bleached bone...The problem is that I don't know what to highlight it with (outside of just mixing in white, but it's too harsh of highlight) and what to line it with (I'm thinking a darker shade of brown)
The Skulls. The lib has skulls all over him...White just seems too...bright, for this sort of thing, and grey doesnt show off enough. Suggestions?
What can I expect? I already expect people to be pelting them with LasCannon batteries but what else should I be worried about? Leading my forces is a Librarian (I dont like the look of the axe...Idea's on how to convert it into a hammer?..Most likely just GS)
Since I plan to take them with a ML/LAS VEN dread, I believe I have anti-tank issues...as when that's gone I have to rely on cyclones/up close powerfist beat downs.
Outside of planting them firmly in cover (so the P.fists are striking at the same time) what else really is there? Obscure line of sight with terrain..etc. I'm thinking of LandRaiders to deliver some punishment in the form of Assault Terminators, but considering my base troops cost so much, if that LR went boom so would a sizeable chunk of my force.
Already I can see my biggest threat being Tau. Railguns vs Terminators....owch.
2nd coming being Orks (bye bye 2+)
3rd Necrons. Since I have no wepons that can 1 shot kill them or ignore their armour saves, WBB will generally happen. Unless firing Kraks via cyclone.
Painting: This is all a matter of personal preference. I painted my skulls Skull White funny enough and I like it, but I'd suggest you look at other DW paintjobs on the GW site and the net to inform your decision.
Performance: DW Killers - Shooting = Plasma (Especially cannon) CC = Anything with power weapons (Banshees, Incubi).
For your Librarian there are lots of suitable alterative weapons, Coteaz has a suitable hammer.
Although I like Stern's sword;
However there is one killer application for assault termies you really must discover.
Chaplain (Litanies) + Lightning Claw Termies + Charge.
On the charge - reroll all missed to hit - reroll all failed to wound - no armor saves.
Rolling it out in front of me assuming T4 WS4 no armour save (marines and equivalents) it did:
1st Try - 13 wounds.
2nd Try - 14 wounds.
3rd Try - 11 wounds.
Thats basically a 10 Man Squad dead, no saves, no WBB (especially nice when you consider 10 Necrons is 180 points...).
Engagement: Assault cannons are your friend, pelt them with the rending shots and then assault them! And this will also solve a lot of your anti-tank (rending is lovely).
Don't ever take just one Dreadnought, take 2 at least or none. A single AV12 walker will get hit by anti-tank weapons the first turn and die without another to dilute the fire. Oh and remember if you deep strike you can still fire your assault cannons/missiles at that side armour...
Specific opponents: Don't expect to win against Orks....but your dead wrong about Necrons, Necrons struggle against Termies! They have a single AP2 weapon on their Heavy Destroyers that you must target at the first oppurtunity, and seeing as they are 3/5 in a squad it isn't hard to kill them. Their power weapons are only on their Pariahs (which not many players even own), and are at I3. Assault them with your Lightning Claws and they will never even get a chance to use those Warscythes! (Note: Lightning Claws, don't ever ever try it with power fists). The only other problem is the Lord, but your Librarian with a Master Crafted Force Weapon should own him. Indeed unless your opponent wields a C'tan, I'd bet heavily on the Deathwing.
I really don't know what you mean about not being able to deny Necrons WBB....every model in your army wields a power weapon! Charge them, show them your Lightning Claws and Powerfists and those warriors will fall like wheat.
The only thing i can do is annunciate what he said further. Its genius, personally I'm going for a Chaplain in an assault termie squad. Charge into close combat and re-roll misses, its devastating. And YES plasma cannons are god, they will annihilate with those blast templates! I'm having those same problems with painting, sorry I can't help. Tell me what you decide to do though I would like to know how it turns out.
The difficult decision now you will have to make is what will your HQ be...
Librarian, Chaplain or Master of The Deathing?

for painting what colour under coat do you use. i suggest white then paint the weapons black.
When I can get my hands on my camera I'll post one up.
Orks I figure will be me needing to make use of Fury of the Ancients +FOTD on my Lib to thin down numbers, as well as moving back 6 inches at a time, firing my stormbolters into the crowds + Assault cannons + Cyclones.
Nids are my most common opponent, but I think I know how to take care of them...
HT : The lib'll eat it. Mc forcewepon + 6 ish attacks on the charge = Atleast one of the damn things will be able to peirce and rip him down in 1 hit....I strike at a higher init due to a familiar.
Assuming that doesnt work, AC's/krak missiles aught to open him up.
Hordes of gaunts : Fear of the dark isn't amazingly useful since they all have nodes, but could work....I'd be inclined to use veil of time, to make sure I smashed each and everyone of them in CC....But stormbolters/ac's/templates aught to deal with them effectively.
Fex : See HT
Zoans (he loves these damn things) : Pray that the hood neutralizes it before it lands a pieplate on my terminators and blast it to hell before it can close any distance.
I love Libs, but the chaplain leading a squad of Lightning clawed terms is pretty sweet....In addition to atleast 1 being a storm hammer to mess with high ini creatures should I need to attack them...or vehicles if I get the opertunity.
yeah a Chaplain in a Deathwing Terminator Assault Squad just might be the coolest thing I have ever heard of...
Or not? Deathwing assault terminator squad is worse than a normal assault terminator squad if you include a chaplain
Lets see, 45pt terminators or 40pt terminators... Hmm which are better. Sorry I gotta say "any other" chapters assault terminators are better and more of a "wow" thing if they are accompanied by a chaplain
Fearless > stubborn
I don't see why so Kirasu, considering this thread is discussing Deathwing armies. "Any Other" chapter terminators can't be fielded as an army purely of Terminators.
And "Any Other" chapter terminators aren't more of a "wow" thing, they are exactly the same amount of a "wow" thing (seeing as they play exactly the same on the table apart from Stubborn). The only issue you have mentioned is that Deathwing Termies having stubborn is pointless when led by a Chaplain. However you forget that ALL Deathwing squads on a battlefield get Stubborn, and so while the Chaplain's squad having fearless is 25 points wasted admittedly, Stubborn is an asset in all the other terminator squads. And the ability to pin stubborn units isn't so much of a liability really, when you consider the demolisher cannon is probably the only AP2 weapon that causes pinning.
So what I'm trying to say is; a Deathwing assault terminator squad is not worse than a normal terminator assault squad it is the same. Although the ability you pay 25 points for is a liability when there is a Chaplain in the squad, it is an asset at all other times.
Deathwing terminators are cool by themselves; add a chaplain for re-rolling misses and it makes assault worth it.
I'm not going to cry for 25 pts.
