i think yes because they lack a cheap massable 'meat shield' type unit for assalt, all space marines are quite expensive compared to lets say hormagaunts...
i think they come in second in worst cc after IG
(except some units in BA and SW but they are quite expensive to get)
You can't be serious...
Space Marines are great in CC... True they don't have meat shields but they are far better than Tau for example...
Space Marines are a good all round army and are exellent in CC as well as shooting.
Yeah they don't have meat shields, just big thick ceramite chest plates. Also they can take CC weapons and up their # of attacks, unlike Necrons. They're far better in CC than Tau, DE, IG, Some Eldar (from what I've heard; never played against elves)and roughly 80% of Nids.
i dont know, for a team that is supposed to be all around and not good at anything, they're kinda good at everything. i would have thought average stats were supposed to be 3's for everything and a 4+sv.
then are they as fast as gaunts? shoot as well as eldar? tough as necrons? fight as good as orks?
which is why everyone collects marines.
pretty much, though normal marines can kill anyone in cc except pure assault units. even then, SW, BA, BT marines can take care of it.
Warhammer is expensive.
Space marines cost too much to just swarm an army like the 'nids or orks. This means they need the power armor so much more. They can hold their own against squads with approximatly the same number of people, but once they are outnumbered by 2:1, its all over.
oh and power weapons make a marine tremble.
Well think of it this way, space marines don’t so much have meat shields as they do huge giant metal power armor shields. Do you see where im going with this? Space marines don’t need meat shields they have so much armor.
i wouldn't say they suck in CC, on the whole they are better than most armies. Ws 4 and power armor make even the "standard" Marine good at CC. You cant use mob tactics with SM... that concept is kinda silly. They strike with surgical precision, not hordes of guys... I think either you or the people you play against should learn how to use them correctly...
That being said, I do think that the Specialist "Assault " squads are not as good as other armies Assault specialists. The armament they have availible to them is a little lacking. Plasma Pistols are nice... but they become a little pointless with the new Assault rules... I'm not complaing, because Lord knows they are still brutal in CC I just think it's kinda silly they don't have options to take power weapons instead.
And I'm not talking about the CC specialist Marines... (Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Black Templars... HMMMM... Maybe the Vanilla Marines don't get Power Weapons 'cause these guys took 'em all.... )

I guess the answer depends on who your playing
A properly equiped CSM, Eldar, Ork, Tyranid or especially Dark Eldar army can usually reap a basic marine army in close combat when used properly..
The rest the marines should be ok agianst
the 3 specialist "close combat chapters" however stand a far better chance at beating the above armies in hth (call me biased but for maximum close combat power take BT!
heres a logical tactical idea
I tend to think that our (vanilla style marines) Clc troops are ment to take out the other teams Heavy weapon teams. In our case it works just nice. You shoot the apponents Clc troops not assault them. =D
I often use a bike squad and an assault squad as a team shoot and then assault on one tight flank, that often work to break the apponents flank
