i want to collect ig and i don't know which guys to get. so if it is no trouble could u guys help me out
Model wise, just go with whateverone you like the look of better
Doctrine wise there are some Articles and such here - http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ad.php?t=30392 (Index Of Imperial Guard Articles)
Two Boxes of Guardsmen and a Chimera will be the easiest way to get a playable (and legal!) army going.
Out of the Guardsmen boxes you can use some of the men to convert your 5 man command squad, 5 men for a platoon command squad, a minimum of 20 men (for two 10 man platoon squads) and then 10 guardsmen to go with the Chimera and be an Armored Fist squad. Thats the smallest legal list for standard Guard.
You will definately need the Imperial Guard Codex, so you can put together a legal army list and will know what to model your men with (officers, vox casters, etc).
If you can afford more than the above mentioned, buying MORE guardsmen is NEVER a bad idea, and you may want to pick up a Leman Russ tank and some Heavy Weapons teams so you can pack more punch in your squads.

Hit the nail on the head, as it were.
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
that is a very good advise, remember that you can do with a bit of converting, 15 heavyweapons from the heavyweapons box, just buy extra bases and you'll be on your way. A small tip also, try to paint your guardsmen before you buy more. There's nothing more frustrating than 40 unpainted guardsmen, if you want to limit the painting time just give them a simple colourscheme with 2-3 main colours.Originally Posted by GuardinGnome
Good luck with the guard!
From a guy who just started an IG army as well, here's my advice:
1. When building your infantry, remember that a squad of 10 guys can only take one flamer or grenade laucher (ie. special weapons from the box set) so if you want a special weapon, only give one guardsmen either one. I made the mistake of making two special weapon troopers and then didn't have enough troops to make the squad.
2. Heavy Weapon squads. As stated before, one set of 3 HWs can make up to 12 HWs with some inventiveness (ie. building something for the extra lascannons to sit on). You also have to come up with more guardsmen for the extra HWs. So save the kneeling guys for the weapons that absolutely need someone kneeling. My missle launchers are all standing up.
3. I bought the army box (not sure what the exact name is) since I knew I would use all of it (40 guardsmen, 3 HWs, Leman Russ). Not a bad deal. You save a little bit.
4. With the army box, you can make a commander from the extra tank commander figure.
duffx the army box only includeds 20 cadians, not 40
you best bet is to get this-
20 additional men
this will give you-
a leman russ- an icon of the guard, great for fire support etc
a command squad with heavey weapon
a platoon command squad with a heavey weapon
2 squads of men with missile launchers (make them standing up with the launchers)
a squad of men with a missilie launcher, mounted in a chimera
a fire support squad with 3 lascannons, heavey bolters or autocannons
you will need to make somethign to rest some of your heavey weapons on, instead of using the three legged tripod- try using the 2 legged tripod to mount an autocannon
good luck, and welcome to the best army in the 40k universe

Sometimes its as easy as drybrushing your main color over the black! Then just add some details to the gun, paint the boots a different color, quickly do the skin and you're done. Thats my take on it.
Dont let the massive amount of work get to you, pace yourself and slowly build a great army.

If you have serious cash... do this..
