Im recently getting back into the game after a long time off, and I wanted to begin collecting a SM force that is highly manuverable and could contain a good portion of CC/short range type units. Eventually I'd like it to get up to around 2000 points. I like the Dark Angels... colors, backstory, everything; so the questions...
Is a decent army like this possible with DA? Are other chapters, BA/SW, so much better at this that I should look to them? Will a generic marine assault squad (like the DA can field) be adequate vs the majority of troops? And anything else anyone wants me to know..
Expense is what drove me out the first time, just want to be sure Im buying the right thing.
Hmm... Perhaps some custom traits? "Take the fight to them" and "Cleanse and purify" seem to fit this. Either that or the zealous Black Templar seem to fit you.
Dark Angels are not a great CC army -- none of their special rules really benefit CC at all. I'd suggest looking at Black Templars, Blood Angels, or Space Wolves (or perhaps a traited chapter) for a good close and dirty army. Black Templars have a lot of nice rules -- lots of power weapons, and can close fairly quick.
Additionally, if you don't want to play any of those "main" armies and want a change of pace, Ravenguard is pretty cool -- they're based on lots of mobility, and I believe are fairly close-combat oriented.
Another option is the Ravenguard traits described in the Codex. Seems about right for a CC-orientated-but-still-flexible army
Thanks for the replies!
Id get a custom chapter and just name the the "dark hellbringers" and make them similar to the dark angels but customise the, to what u need
"In a large war, the tanks only battle the tanks, its up to the footsloggers to win the war" -me
Raven guard... very good CC, very maneuverable. Only problem is the limit of one tank (not such a problem in my book). You can easily go with 3 squadrons of tornados, three assault squads, and some devastators/tac squads for fire support. I've seen a lot of RG armies with 2-3 CC scout squads to support Shrike.
I'd say if you want CC dont go dark angel. I'd say space wolves, I play them and I get some decent shooting on the way to assault. Since you can have bolters and cc and still get the extra attack you can be getting alot of shots off on your way. But I personally use pistols more tho since you dont get the bonus from the charge if they have bolters. But SW have good ranged heavy support. And plus I field a Ven dread and a regular, so thats alot of assault cannon shots too. So if you want good CC and the ability to shoot then imho Space Wolves. One downfall is they got shanked heaviliy in 4th edition
Oh and BA might be good too I'm not sure tho cause I havent played against them before.
Space Wolves- 4,000 pts
Dwarves in progress
In terms of pure assault armies, Blood Angels are by far the most specialised. If you want a decent ranged fire support to back you up, then look elsewhere. BA can expect some heavy weapons support from some dreads and maybe a predator, and the Black Rage can ruin it for any infantry heavy weaponry. Then again, you've got the best hand-to-hand marine chapter in the game.
Space Wolves are a tad more flexible, but still useful in the melee. They can pack a punch with heavy weaponry, mainly to soften up potential targets before assaulting them. Space Wolves are very adaptable and unique - they have their own army list - but they did get royally nerfed in 4th edition.
Dark Angels are not what you're looking for if you want CC.
I'd say Black Templars are your best bet, or maaaybe Space Wolves. Blood Angels are all-out charge and Dark Angels special rules really don't benefit any close-combat fighters. Black Templars, on the other hand, get lots of power weapons and lots of Land Raiders for transporting troops . Not to mention the Emperor's Champion.
Space wolves have a great history, but depending on the player can get a little difficult to use. Probably the best one though would be the black templars specialy with their oaths. Plus their assault squads are quite nice.
