I am realitively new to Guard armies and I have been playing around with a couple ideas.
One of which is a Ultrmar based Guard army. I play against a Undefeated Tyranid player alot and thought this theme of army would be good against a Tyranid player.
I have opted for the following Doctrines to represent Ultramar Guard:
Close Order Drill
Xenos Fighter: Tyranids
Ratling Squad (rep by sniper guards, no abhumans)
Would these Doctrines fit well in a guard army bent on de-throning a Tyranid player. The Tyranid player usually uses two big units of jumping guants, one genestealer unit max size, three biovoires (hate these no guessing no aiming no nothing punks!) 2 Thropes a Tyrant and 2-3 Warriors squads. With the new rules coming out he will probably be even deadlier.
But back to the subject at hand. I am thinking two platton squads. each with a command, a lascannon squad, and a heavy botler squad. A HQ command squad, with 4-5 support platforms, Hell hound, 2 Ratling squads of 5, vet squad with auto and grenade, and a Russ and bassie. Basically 2 pies and a alot of heavy guns, ratlings to pick off warriros since they will not be instant killed anymore (seems more shots is the only option for them).
* Would Xeno's fighter work well with guard? I know we are not a CC army but can X fighter give me a boost to survive combat atleast one round?
* Would a droop troop Vet squad work well? Say agianst the Biovores?
*Close Order Drill, could this work against a Horde?
I have very little experience against Tyranids, but I will say this: if the only squad being dropped will be the vets, why not just let them infiltrate? They can do it for free, and then you can use the doctrine point on something else.
In the little experience I do have, I've found that Tyranids are very suseptible to template weapons, as you obviously know. The hellhound should be good, as should the pie plates. You might want to give the vets (or any other squad likely to get charged early) a flamer, also. Flamers can wreak havoc on 'nids.
I do think that xeno fighters would work good so take it. Your support squads need to have lascannons and autocannons. They will try to get close so for that give your platoons gren launchers. Maybe dont take drop troops and save some points.
Hope this helps.
