Back in the throws of 40k after some 10 years. Planning a DH armie without IG (just because large numbers of troops isn't the reason I decided to go DH). I have five really old Grey Knights terminators from the past and at least I can use them, although, the new figures would be sweet to paint. I'm looking to build a 500 - 1000pt armie.
I know the first step is the Codex, but I'm ordering that and some figures at the same time and have been looking through this site for strategies, experiences, etc., trying to figure out my first purchase. In post many refer to the "Grandmaster" as their HQ choice. Is this a standard GK Terminator upgrade, or a name for an Inquisitor that isn't labeled as such in the online store? I'm not planning on going up against Chaos (mainly Necrons and Eldar), so I don't want to overspend on specialist for Chaos armies. So it sounds like the Grandmaster, with a requiem of 3 terms is a good battle-ready HQ. But I just don't know who that is.
Second, if I'm thinking of just GKs, then I need to get them in close without the use of a meat-shield IG) ASAP. I know the Codex will be a big source for all of this, but what models will I need to help facilitate this? Besides Deep Strike and other GK specialties, is their models that provide addition means like smoke and teleportation?
Last, Purgation vs. standard GK squad? At the beginning should I just get 2 squads of regular GKs, and not the Purgation with the psycannon?
I know these questions are almost all answered in the Codex, but I'm 200mi. from the nearest GW and your experienced advice would save me time and get me off to a better start with less wasted model purchases online. Thanks
Hmm... I just started out as well.. I have Stormtroopers as Troopschoices, which leaves my GKs free for Fast Attack or Purgation Squad (heavy support).
Get yourself a GK Grand Master (a normal GK Hero in termie armour), and some Termies as retinue. Perhaps you should invest in a few Chimeras as transports? Get the normal Grey Knights and toy around with them (just break the WYSIWYG rule if you dont feel too attatched to it) and then get the Psycannon bolt GKs if you wish later on. And the Stormtroopers are great as they are lowcost and have Plasmaguns.
Just some ideas =) .
Good luck with your army.
stormtroopers are useful to bolster the troops and can also be used to sheild the GK if necessary
i would buy 2 boxes of Grey Knights and 1 box of Terminators(this comes with the model for a GK hero as a leader as is explained in the codex)
i would not go purgation squad and try to get as many GK as possible (with a 3-terminator retinue)
incinerators on GK would be useful if u are going up against the Seer Council
hopw this helps but when u get the codex it will explain alot and then u can come back for specific help
