Hey I currently play Tyranids and am looking for a new army to start. I just purchased the codexes for deamonhunters, imperial guard, and witchhunters online so they should be here in a few days. Currently I play agianst three opponents who play marines, choas, and orks, they also have Tau available, and are trying to start necrons, and eldar. I am not worried about anything but the orks and would like to know how well Daemonhunters fair against orks...My tryanids eat them up like a perkins breakfast but evey single time I see them go against anyone who puts terminators on the table, or a juiced up deamonprince with a retinue the orks just chop them down like butter. The choppas reduce saves and then terminators and marines die like guardsmen with carpace armor...
Is there something that you guys do to take down orks, that would be good even when you are playing against chaos, or marines. (we make one list then battle each list individually and then do one large game of king of the hill).
My current plan is to induct witch hunters, but I might do guardsmen instead...I just don't want to have an army that is popular where ever I go.
Well, Grey Knights have one of the best anti-Ork weapons in the game (in my opinion, at least): stormbolters! That, plus S6, means that you can advance on the Orks (or just sit and wait), and not be afraid to get stuck in with them. Sure, the Choppas hurt, but between stormbolters and Nemesis Force Weapons, GK can definitely own the Orks.
Orkish vehicles are probably some of the easiest for DH to take down, since GK have a lot of S5 & S6 weaponry (psycannons, incinerators, nemesis force weapons). You also don't have to worry about bringing in a pair of Dreadnoughts or a Land Raider just for the lascannons, for the same reasons.
GK Terminators, of course, are something I wouldn't bring to an Ork fight. They're just too damn expensive to have a reduced save! If you're looking for HQ alternatives, I'd say to take either a lone Brother-Captain (with no bodyguard at all) and stick him into a power armored GK unit, or take an Inquisitor Lord and set him & his retinue up for shooting (psycannon on the Lord, 2-3 heavy bolter servitors, 0-1 plasma cannon servitor), since that'll mow down Orks even faster. And since the only real benefit of taking a GK Hero is access to GK Vehicles, and you don't need GK vehicles vs Orks, then you're all set!
Purgation squads, with 2-4 psycannons, will absolutely DESTROY Orks.
If your Ork foe has a ton of infantry, take an Orbital Strike. Risky and random, but an entire pie-plate of S10 doom if it hits. And since Orks like to charge, set the Strike up on a choke-point on the map, where the Orkish horde has to pass to get to your lines. Mmmmfun!
Also, Inducted IG is always helpful. A platoon of Guardsmen could give you a lot of heavy bolters & autocannons, and an Armored Fist gives you mobility, heavy bolters, multilasers, and heavy flamers on wheels!
Personally, I don't like a DH/WH army. I don't think they're the best match game-wise, and fluff-wise they don't exactly get along all the time. DH/IG or DH/SM is a much more appropriate mix (although DH/SM isn't possible with Grey Knights involved). I'd suggest focusing on just a DH army until you hit 1000pts or so, just so you understand your army's strengths and weaknesses before trying to supplement them.
Doooooood, Get an LRC. That would mow down orcs like crazy.
i'd perfer purgation squads vs. orks over land raiders really. however, if those orks are heavy on truks and buggies, the crusader can really make itself shine when all the transports are either shot or immobilized (better if you immbolize the thing in a small path, slowing the ork advance). if you get a purgation squad, you can double the fun with a shooty inquisitor (15 psycannon and 12 heavy bolter shots.. sounds like such bliss to me..)
"One thing that intrigues people to fantasy is how different it is from reality. Make sure you remember that difference, and you'll have a wonderful time."
You don't have to worry about Orks the least.
Only be scared of Orks if they decide they're going to be toting plasma ^^.
Lots of wounds + plasma weponry is the devil. They can just keep railing off the shots at you and your 25 point marines fall quickly to them under sustained plas fire.
As was said before, you don't have to worry too much about their vehicles, as they are all comparitively light...if they managed to loot a leman russ or a bassy...you could be in for a long day.
