Simple question, the guy i play against wants to dedicate his IG army to the Catachans, the local GW store still sells the Codex:Catachans, which is better to field? The Catachans from the IG codex or the ones in the Catachans Codex. They do get funky ambushes and traps in their own codex but i'm not sure if they are still "legal" today.
He prefers the foot slogging army and isn't going to waste time and points on tanks when he can field more guns
Ok... well... no opinion huh. Well let me ask this, are Codex: Catachan armies accepted in tournaments and still considered usable with 4th Ed rules?
Someone gotta have an opinion?
Last i heard, Codex: Catachans is obsolete. If you want an catachan army you use the doctrines specified in the back of the codex. Some tournaments might accept the old catachan codex armies, but i do belive it would be best to check that up with them.
Thanks for that. I personally prefer the codex:Catachans, ambushes, traps and imo better command structure. It's a pitty that they probably will phase out that old codex, maybe they should revamp it for the new ed.
they should. most doctrines tend to mess around armies (for instance, steel legion. why give us conscripts when we're mechanized... makes 50 models with 5 chimeras cost a fortune... a waste of a doctrine point..)

I agree that Codex Catachans would be better. 5 man squads, each with a missle launcher, and yoiu have a lot of HW in an army.

by mistake I didn't read the "guard infantry" rule regarding deepstrikers so I played a battle with a deepstriking conscripts squad, and I'm glad GW put that restriction on, because it was nasty. The squad scattered behind some trees shielding it from most fire. think I took 10 casulties or so, then in the Assault face, 10 tau firewarriors were clubbed down, then it was just to jump through the rest of the army.
and kaiser is right you can't take conscripts in chimeras.
Codex: Catachans contains all the stats for 'Deathworld Veterans' with all their different abilities. It also has the stats for catachan only units like the Catachan Devil squad, Veteran Snipers and Sentinal squads.
If u want to have a Catachan Army u need the IG Codex for the basic Troops, the codex just gives u bonus units. You can field a Deathworld Veteran Only Army but i wouldnt bother unless ur going to have a board with LOADS of jungle cos of the cost of each unit. But then a person would be crazy to play u on a board like that cos of all the bonus's u get... except maybe tyranids cos they fly through difficult terrain.

If you wait til May 24, GW are releasing the list as a PDF..
