Hi, ive been playing 40k for a couple of years now and I currently have a large nid army and the allmighty Tau.
It's about time I start a new shooty army as I like them more than cc forces.
I'm going to be asking this in the chaos fourom aswell, so what does the IG offer in terms of blowing lots of things up that the iron warriors don't.
I like the look of both armies alot, but unfortunatly I cant afford both at the moment.
Any feedback would be great, thanks alot Judge
one thing you have to be prepared for is that being an IG player isn't as easy as it seems. First off you're crap in assaults, second our normal troops have the worst gun in the entire universe.
Mass infantry. Watch your opponents jaw drop to the floor when he faces a horde IG army with 200+ models, with a heckload of heavyweapons and lasguns, nasty but tiresome to paint.
The best tanks. IG is unique because of it's tanks, load up three basilisks or three russes and be prepared for your opponent to cry "cheese!". These tanks have strong armour, ap 3 and ap 2 ordnace weapons and are relativly cheap.
Heavyweapons. How many lascannons? 27! with a massinfantry army or a normal guard army your opponent can never match the amount of heavyweapons you are tooting, roll dice and enjoy.
worst gun. S 3 ap 0 is not pretty but remember when using a 100 or 200 of these small "flashlights" even spacemarines will die.
second worst at assault. Rampaging hivetyrants and terminators can turn the battle into a bloodbath, certain CC units can IG never beat in assault, unless you swamp him with all of your guardsmen, remeber everything counts in large amounts!
Many, many, many guardsmen to paint. If your going for a horde army (which is most effective) then be prepared for some heavy painting. Keep your guardsmen nice but try to have a simple and quick paint scheme.
That's all I can think of, some of the other guys (and gals) will surely point out some more obvious strengths/weaknesses.
Another con would be that with so many models there will be very little space between your squads, resulting in your opponent being able to consolidate into another melee right away.
with so many men on the field your bound to take heavy losses no matter what, and still out number your opponent.
Well, as stated if you want pure shootiness, go with IG. However, (I can't believe that I'm going to say this...) with your other two armies in mind, Iron Warriors would bring you more of a change in pace, as the guard is almost a blend of the two armies you have already (though if that's what you're looking for, look no further!). Still... it's not like the world needs another IW army...
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely...
but it rocks absolutely, too!
Personally guard are a mix of tau and nids....
You get heavy, powerful ranged support...and you have alot of numbers. Too bad they aren't worth a whole lot firepower wise.....but they make up for it by being able to simply roll a pail of a dice on the table and have them magically fall before them...
The "Angry flashlights" *insert best bevis and butthead voice* are not really that great for anything on their own. A single marine has a pretty good chance of walking up to a squad of 10 guard from 24 inches away and actually winning. On the other hand, when you have several hundred of those flashlights firing at something...well, then you need to roll alot of saves..you're bound to fail one eventually.
I would take IG because...
Stormtroopers and Mortars may not be too good, but they make me smile.
A squad is worth less than 100 pts. Sure, your enemy could wipe them out without too much trouble, but they won't get many VP's for it. With the worst rolling of my entire life I almost beat a friend's Necron's the other day because all the infantry squads he dropped were worth bupkiss.
I would take IW becuse...
They can have Bassie's too.
9 Obliterators is brutal.
Over all, I am happy I went with IG.
With the new codex we got some new options, and guards are cheap enough to try more than one at once. We can take two basilisks firing from out of sight, cover them with a russ and still have loads of infantry with an insane amount of heavy and special weapons.
Best of all you can deepstrike anything from lone last chancer with a demolition charge up to a full 55 men platoon with 10 melta\plasma weapons.
In short: guards will give you a wide range of tactics, if you don't bother painting 100+ minis.

3 words.... Lots Of Tanks...
so enjoy running over your opponent...
P.S. Blood angels rule, the anger lets us ignore wounds ...hehehe
Hey, new guy here. If you want to be the most obnoxious shooty player on the planet, nothing beats IG. Around 100-200 guys lighting up the field with lasguns, then heavy weapons squads, mortar squads, flamers, heavy flamers, missile templates and krak missiles, hardened veterans, Sentinel squads, the crapload of tanks, etc. If you want to force your opponent to make A LOT of armor saves, then invest in flamers and weapons that feature a blast template. As far as assaults go, A full squad of Ogryns, A Commissar for leadership (screw the Bone 'Ead), and a Priest with Rosarius and Eviscerator. The Commissar has a Powerfist (strike last, but S6!) and the priest lets any missed to-hits be re-rolled. So the squad of 9 Ogryns (A2, A3 for charging at S6) the the Commissar (Strike last, S6, A3, A4 charging with extra ccw) then the priest (S6, A3 while charging) You're looking at 34 attacks! All at S6! They have a lousy armor save, so keep them SAFE!. I know you are looking for something shooty, but to have a unit of these bad boys can help in a pinch (say, if that unit of Khornate Berzerkers decides you look tasty). If nothing else, they can tie-up an enemy unit. Just thought I might throw in my two cents.
I second this!Originally Posted by dunno
No guard army should be without 3 heavy support choices and as many hellhounds/chimeras that you can field!
