I was thinking of starting a Marine army as my alternet. This will also give my girlfreind an army to play with because she has expressed intrest in learning and SM is a good beginers army to top of everything else.
The reason I chose SM other than that is because it costs the least to get a feildable force. I have some questions though before I disided to spend my hard earned cahs.
1. What are Chapter Traits? What do they let me do? What kinda of stuff is avalible?
2. Is a Librarian a good HQ until I have the money to buy a Force Commander? Also are the things in the Command sqaud box the only thing that can go into command squads?
3. Is this a good starting force: Librarian, Tactical Marine Squad, Scout Squad built with Blister Packs (Sergent, 4 Snipers, Heavy Bolter)?
Space marines are an excellent beginers force and can be modified for a more advanced player and have a lot of unit choices so you can make your army your way.
1. Traits. Here is what they do they do one of three things
1 they let you take special units such as bikes as other choices Troops and Elites
2 They alow you to change weapon options such as another plasma gun instead of lascannon
3 They alow some of your units to take one of the universal traits
But beware they have a cost or DRAWBACK
2. the librarian is a good choice and his weapon is pretty powerful but he can be expensive good choice. For some reason comand squads dont have the ability to take wargear as much as veterans but they can take a descent amount.
3. Yes that is a good begining army but wont cost much points I would instead of the Tactical box Buy 2 combat boxes you get 2 rocket launchers that way. Also you may want to invest in either a dreadnough or some terminators they can ad some punch to your army but not befor you have at least 15 or more power armored space marines scouts not included in this number This is just my opinion and my style of play. If you want your librarian to be mobile put him on a bike or Jetpack because it is expensive to buy 2
Hope this helps
I wanna get the Tactical Box becuase the new Marines look better. I'm also not that keen on scouts but again its cheaper and I can custemize that weapons they carry move effectivly. I'm thinking of dropping the scouts for more Marines so so I'll probly get another tactical box.
I dont plan on getting a Dreadnot or Termys. I have only personaly fought termies once and I remeber them dieing while deepstriking on the retardedly over sceneried tables at the GW, as far as I know about them they are desiged to get into place by DS then unload heavy fire, footslogging makes them to vulnerable I guess. This stratigy is usless at any public games I play in so its not going to be consitred. Also none of my SM playing freinds use Termies, one uses a dreadnot but right now its to expensive for me to consider.
I'm sorry if I feel like a whine but there seriousy is little to no room on the game tables I have to play with in public places. 2 places have them, all of them are over crowded with scenery, most immoble. All armies and stratigies I conciter are based on this. If i go to a turnement held at any of these places I need a force that is mobile, small (so it has room to manuver) and not dependant on deepstriking for stratigy.
I would have gone IG with Morter Squads if it wasnt for the number of models leaving no room to move. Thats how bad the level of scenery is. With only a 2 person battle we are only allowed 4'x4' of table space and about 2'x2' of its covered in landscape, buildings and other such inpassable terrain.
Building an army for home use is a wast of money because it doesnt matter how I play vs. my freinds when they have time to play (rarely at this time of year), it how often I can play to make the $ cost worth it agenst other people, which means ****ty terrain conditions.
Actually now I dont feal like buying a new army.
I like the librarian regardless of the commander. Mine has jump pack iron halo familiar power sword artificer armour the list goes on and on. The is more than a land raider but can wipe out entire squads ALONE. Generally i put him with an assult squad for support he is very expensive but makes his points back about 70% of the time.
First of all, well done, you have a girlfriend.
Now i would recommend a chaplain for your army, they are fearless, good with a jump pack, and better with a 10 man assault squad attached to him
also a dreadnaught is a must have, without one your army isnt a space marine one.
also allow me to say: termies, termies, termies. People say they are overpriced but i disagree, they can survive nearly anything, my friend who plays ig with battle cannons really hate them, and now with rending they rock, problem is they empty out pockets

A:I would say no,but it depends on which chapter you are going to collect. But i would reccomend first buy 2 Tactical squads, then a Librarian or Master which ever you decide. Then expand from there to suit your/chapters style of play.
If you are collecting a 'shooty chapter such as Dark Angels or another chapter with a shooty list the Master would be a better choice to take over the Librarian. Why you ask?Because of the Rites of Battle Master rule which gives every unit on the board Ld10.
Hope that helped.
Tell us what chapter you are going to collect or swinging towards.
I suggest this starting force
2 boxes of space marine combat squads
1 box of space marine tactical squad
1 HQ guy your choice i recomend librarian as the chappy is jsut as expensive and dosent have fore weapon or physcics and a hero has no abilitys other than the ld
you will want a tank i like vindicators
You will NEED a dreadnought OR terminators OR both i dont use termies):
You will want a heavy weapon squad
You will NEED an assault oriented squad in either a tank or jetpack
There you have it that is the basic army
Tell us what chapeter or what traits or even what color and we can help you tailor your list as you would like
Is a crozius not a power weapon? Excuse my ignorance but what's the difference between power weapons and force weapons?
Also are the psychic powers really worth it? Is there anything as good as Lightning Arc or Displacement from 2nd Edition? I think not, but am yet to try them out.
One more question....
Does a Chaplain in Terminator Armour lose his Rosarius? Or does he get it instead of the 5+ save?
I know you are have a deep seated interest in Marines, but I would like to take this chance to try and recruit you for the Guard. It only takes 3 boxes of men, or 2 and a chimera and you can do what ever you want, plus they are a lot more fluffy.
