Reading a bit of the SM Codex last night and it details Chapter Masters and Captains. Rarely a chapter master would lead a, say, 2000/3000 point army but a company captain might.
Given that the rules for commanders and captains in the main army list are rubbish for what we are lead to believe are the greatest warriors in the company I was wondering if rules could be made (house rules) for a company captain.
Maybe give them the same stats as a 2nd Edition commander had i.e
WS7, BS7, S5, T5, W3, I7, A3, LD10 with a chapter master going to WS8, BS8, S5, T5, W4, I8, A4, LD10.
I know this sounds too tough but restricted to armies of say 3000 points for a company captain and 5000 points for a chapter master would possibly balance it out. I don't have a clue how to work out points. Maybe five points per level above a force commander, i.e a company captain would cost a base of 70 (I think) + 40 = 110. (5* (that's FIVE MULTIPLIED BY EIGHT!)
I also realised the contradiction with Marneus Calgar for example being a chapter master and not having those stats.
But to say these are the ultimate warriors of the chapter, the best of the best, I don't think they are tough enough.
Just an idea, but I don't think the current stats reflect the fluff.

Those are the stats of a monstrous creature now, the days of 2nd edition are over. But i do think there should be a greater diffirence between masters and captains...

Cheaper points values = more models = more brass for GW I understand that. But why did they change the stats of all the armies? Surely the rules would be the same whatever the stats were.
Just find it daft that the highest ranking character in a SM army has a maximum of 2 better WS.
IMO, Calgar should be able to take on a Hive Tyrant, carnifex, and win with relative ease.
isntead of a completely pumped up character with insane stats across the board, i was always hoping captains and masters would have really high ws and I, the rest should stay the same as they still are only human (well, sort of lol). So i think S, T, and W should be, 4, 4, 3 respectively, although i do agree with a much higher WS or BS, but not both on the same char.

I'm thinking the HQs should be tougher. An extra point of strength or toughness would do it, in my opinion.
That's a good call Gypsy. It makes perfect sense for Ragnar or Dante to have a cracking WS and just a good BS. Maybe Azrael could be more rounded with WS7, BS7 and only A3.
I can't really get over the fact that WS5 is the best the Marines have to offer.
Out of interest, as I only have the SM codex, what's Abbaddon/Kharn/The Avatar/Hive Tyrant like?
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
Space marines aren't monsters, they are space marines... T5 means that he can take a battlecannon or a lascannon straight on the head without dying, come on...
Also, Marneus Calgar is primarily known as a strategist and not a warrior, although he certainly qualifies as that too.
Kharn is somelike like WS 7. The Avatar is 8, or maybe even 10.
WS doesn't really matter anymore, since you're still hitting people on a 3+ anyway, and they stil hit you on a 5+. There's no hitting on a 2+. WS 5 does just as well against most units as WS 8.
But yes, Commanders do need an improvement. One thing I've never gotten over is that Tigurius is supposed to be one of the greatest psykers in the Imperium - reading the Hive Mind and that - but he costs 160 points to Ezekiel's 206 and Mephiston's 217.
