I am new to this forum but not to the world of 40K. I have played for the last 3 years or so (transition from 3rd to 4th), first with Black Legion, then Eldar, and the IG. I am now thinking about fielding a Space Marine force.
I have always thought the Sons of Medusa had an excellent color scheme and I like the fact that they have very little fluff (Badab War and probably Ultramarine geneseed) on which I can build. My "plan" is to create one of the Companies as my army, either the 3rd, 4th, or 5th.
I need a little help with this plan.
I would love any kind of input from the community about putting together a Company list, i.e. what does the HQ look like; is it fun to play with; am I crazy?
Also, to any Sons of Medusa players/painters out there, where do you put the Company iconography and colors? Since I am playing them as Codex, should the colors go on the shoulder pad edge, the kneepad, or somewhere else?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I know very little about the Sons Of Medusa except that they wear pale green armour with a white helmet.
They have standard squad markings on the right shoulder pad and a skull in a kind of pointy edged circle on the left.
If you are thinking of adding your own markings it would probably be best to do them on the knees so as not to affect the codex scheme too much.
You could distinguish your leaders, Vets etc by painting a stipe down the centre of the helmet in a colour of your choosing or even paint the whole helmet a different colour.
Another way would be to colour the iconography differently on characters and squad leaders.
No idea what the HQ looks like but it stands to reason that if it had any kind of decoration or adornments they would be relevant to the Medusa of legend. Not sure how you'd do that, a Marine with snakes all over his head wouldn't really work.
The only thing I can think of is to give them snake-like helmets which could be achieved by using Lizard man heads then paining them to look like helmets.
Sorry if that's no help but it's the best I can do.
Terminator Based Custom Chapter
Much apprecited Wolfkin. I was also thinking about the kneepad, and I really like the idea of the sergeant stripe on the helmet. Thanks!
I think that an emphasis on the Skulls would work better than the Medusa theme (I plan to name each squad after greek mythology anyway).
I play Sons of Medusa, 6th company actually,
There is little or no official fluff outside the badab war stuff, someone has posted some unofficial stuff on their own site but it is rather tenuous, alot of people thing the name means they are a successor of the iron hands (whose home planet is medusa) however, quite clearly the reference is to the mythic creature, not the planet, hence the chapter badge at the time of the badab war.
My marines are painted as follows:
Base coat Scorpion green
Wash with green ink
re apply base coat
highlight by adding little skull white to the green
repeat highlights covering progressively less area.
Helmets are white with black lining
Chest eagles are grey - highlightd white
squad markings (Right shoulder are black)
Chapter badge is the modern one, although I used the white skull of the sm transfere sheet, this left no room for th halo, so normal squad members just have white skulls, sgts and characters have back banners where the halo is present.
Vehicles all bear the chapter badge with the halo
Recently GW are having a Badab war wekend in the UK, on the GW site are rules for the weekend, including chapter traits for the chapters (including SOM)
It stipulates the traits for Sons of Medusa as being:
See but dont be seen
Cleans and purify
Flesh over steel
For the campaign week end, the official chapters also get a free unit, for SoM it is a deseert world support squad: 5 marines, 2 with heavy bolters and one with a sniper rifle
hope that helps
Thanks very much for the painting tips...I'll bite off them if you don't mind.
What do you think of those traits? I like them as traits go but I'm not sure how they fit with the Sons. Seems like they wanted to incooperate the "unofficial" enhanced senses thing from that guys website. I think I prefer them as Codex but am still thinking about traits as a possibility.
Thanks for all the info.
