You all know I plan on starting a SM army but now that my freinds know I'm serious about it they are telling me not to becuase I'll be just another SM player. They say things like there are already to SM players and they we dont need anymore of them. I agree there are to many but its not like I have much choice, everything else I'm interested like IG or Ork is out of the question becuase $ and time putting together and painting.
I dont hang out with these freinds as often anymore becuase school ( they are starting starting uni after summer) and work so I would like to have another army so I can practice vs. myself for public games (Since I will be fighting alot of SM) and so that when another freind who doenst play comes over I can show them how, SM seems like the best choice for this too becuase if they learn with IG or Ork they will more then likely loose their frist game and not like WH40k (I lost my first game and still liked it but not all people are like me).
However I feel there is a stigma about SM players in my area praticularly. Its hard enouph for me to find a public battle that isnt a mega battle and playing SM I feel will lower my chances.
I need some advice.
I don't see why people wouldnt play you in a normal game just because you play space marines. True, there are a lot
But that's not to say there isnt strategy when space marine plays space marine. Even a bad player can be somewhat of a challenge playing as marines, then again most people dont want challenge or new thinking
Play what you want, and what you like. Im pretty sure you'll be able to find games. It's your money, not theirs. If you cave in and play a different army then imo you should just go play a different game because you just wasted a ton of cash and time
Maybe theme your army, Here are some examples
Infantry army: No Predators, land raiders, vindicators, whirlwinds, dreadnoughts and if you want to go really crazy and make your army really slow, no rhinos, bikes, or even assault marines. (But they are jumo infantry...)
Scout army: Only scouts!!!! w00t!
Terminator army: x2 terminator command squads, and 3 terminator squads, with 2 small scout squads.
There are some very uncomman space marine armies, so it would be different for people to play against, also maybe do a non vanilla marine army? like Blood angels, or space wolves.
I agree with Kirasu. However, if you really want these people to not be scornful, play one of the Eldars. People are usually surprised when somebody beats them with Eldar, and they have realitivly low model count.
Three Companies of the 26th Vinancium
143rd Airborne Badgers (99.9% done)
159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
I dont know. I think I'll hold off getting the marines until I find a more solid opponent base. Right now I pritty much only am able to battle random people in public. I play with my freinds too but not in a few weeks due to conflicting scheduals.Originally Posted by Kirasu
If you want to play SM, do something no one else does. Try an all bike army. Mabe throw in an assault squad or two. That is a cool army to blay. or a "Take the fight to them" with infiltratiors. Or, you could do a First and Tenth, Terminator and Scout only army led by Lysander.
Where's your Baritone Saxophone?
You should definately NOT get an army based on what your friends think, that way lies ruin. You'll only end up buying models for a few hundred credits that you end up never painting.
Nearly all armies are possible to collect on the cheap (well, relatively) if you know what you're doing. Convert characters from plastic instead of buying metal minis for example. Also, armies with weaker troops are usually cheaper dollar-wise. A box of guardsmen cost as much as a box of marines even though you get twice as many guardsmen.
It's harder to save on time but you can get quite a lot of points painted fast if you organize yourself. Paint models at least 5 at a time to save time.
If you still want to go with marines you should try making something original. Blood Angels are not original, but Flesh Tearers might be, and if you make up your own chapter you're free to create something absolutely unique.
If you go with guard, orks or something else you should still try to be original of course, it's just harder with marines
Here is what you should try it is fun.
Crusade this gives you may options
1 you can COLLECT any imperial models as they are part of your crusade
2 all your sms are painted differently and look cool so it is original
3 your army will be mostly infantry so it is different
4 inquisitor can lead your crusade
I am currently torn between this project and my soon to be necron force.
Here is what you do for cheap sms (get the 2 of the old tact boxes 1 of the new one and 2 of the 5 man boxes that is a lot of marines and a lot of heavy weapons. and close combate weapons plus if you can get parts from your friend like swords or whatever. The only thing to remember is they need to have a unifying trait like a sholder pad or banner for each squad.
I remember several years ago people said the same thing about eldar. I played in a tournament and about half of the armies were eldar, because after Dark Millenium came out, they were really powerful and everyone who played tournaments wanted to win, so they would play eldar.
If I were you, and you are collecting Space Marines because you like the army, follow the suggestions listed above, make an original army, whether it be through the rules in the back of the Codex, paint scheme, or unit selection.
If you complete a 1500 or so point space marine army, and want to try something else, you can always move to a different army. Several people on this board have many different armies, if you plan on staying in this hobby for several years, after the first year or so, you will probably want to try something else, just for something new.
If you want SM cause they are cheap to get But what you really want are orks or IG, just go with IG. IG are actually the least expensive army to get because they can have so many models converted from other cheaper lines than the 'official' GW one. True you cant use them in tourney but it doesn't sound like you play in tourneys anyway. Also almost ALL IG vehicles can be scratch built with a little effort. Not so the noble astartes. And even better Guard can also whip most other armies through shear numbers. Even A minimum selection size guard force tends to have 2-3 times the raw troops as a similar points force of most others.
So to sum up,
IG are cheaper to collect, from conversion and scratch building.
IG can be used to show a new player the game as they will carry through on weight of numbers.
IG Are one of the armies you wanted to get anyway.
