I'm having heaps of trouble vs Skimmers in my current battles. (one friend plays Tau, the other Eldar) The main problem is getting enough glancing hits to get through. The more glancing hits, the greater chance of immobalised results, which is how most of their skimmers go down.
I'm thinking of kitting up a couple of units to specifically deal with Skimmers. Namely, my choices are:
- 5 man Terminator squad, Tank Hunter skill, 2 Assault Cannons, in a Drop Pod (285 points)
- 10 man Tactical squad, Tank Hunter skill, in a Drop Pod (210 points)
I've done the probability (never reliable in real life ) and got 3.9 and 4.2 glancing hits respectively, based on shooting to rear AV10 armour (Not counting rending). This is compared to 1.22 glancing hits, for 4 Missile launchers shooting to front AV12 armour.
Options for these squads are namely special weapons AND/OR Power Fist for the tac sqaud. The Termie squad I think is fine and is expensive enough.
With special weapons, I didn't see a vast improvement in glancing hits, but it would help possibly in following turns. The PF would only help if the squad survived to make it to CC. This 'could' happen, but I'm expecting they'll be vaporised the turn after they arrive.
There's also the problem of what happens if they scatter badly. I don't 'think' scattering out of 12' Bolter range should be a problem with good positioning, but scattering so I can't fire at rear armour is definately on the cards.
I guess another option is to kit an Assault squad, minus their jump packs, with melta bombs. Not sure if they'd be allowed to go in via Drop Pod though, and don't think they can get the Tank Hunter skill.
What do people think? Is this a good idea, or am I better spending points on more basic anti-tank?
The easiest thing I can see is just nuke them with a 6 man tac Squad with a lascannon, Not many things will be getting back up after a las shot
Falcons will. The only way of killing a falcon is to shower it with everything you´ve got that is str 6+, or even 4+ from the rear. Eventually, the holo-field will fail. Just don´t count on one big shot to kill it, ist AV isnt its main defence.
But it can only take out one skimmer per turn, and can always miss.Originally Posted by Radeonis
Not that familiar with Tau, can they take skimmer squadrons, or are they all individual tanks?
Either way, a high number of 5-6 strength shots is usually the best best against skimmers, so the tactical squad should be able to manage.
I would be a bit leery about investing in a unit of terminators specifically to deal with skimmers, I find them more suitable for a troubleshooting role. On the plus side, the combination of tank hunters and storm bolters/assault cannon will allow you much more flexibility on the move than a tactical squad.
Or if you just want...take a full dev squad with all Lascannons and give them tank hunter ability...they will all die horribly
Again overkill (290 points). It'll get its points back, but not as efficiently as possible.Originally Posted by Radeonis

The way to deal with skimmers is to remember their weaknesses. The glancing rule onlys works if they've moved more than 6 inches. Remember this and note down how far each skimmer moves each turn.
Tau, don't try to outshoot them. Never match a Tau player from afar, he will be laughing at you. Powerfists and melta bombs, dreadnoughts maybe.
Eldar: Not quite sure what a holo-field does. I've found that against jetbikes and Vypers, concentrated bolter fire can take them down easily. For a Falcon, I recommend one of the following:
- Predator Annihilator with as many lascannons as you can stuff into it.
- A dev squad with: two lascannons and two missiles, or four missiles for cheap, effective power.
Your idea about the assault squads is valid. Keep the jet packs and deep strike them with melta bombs. With a 12'' move, they should be able to keep up with the Falcon and get in close soon enough, if they don't scatter too far.
The biggest and most obvious advantage of a skimmer is its mobility. If you can somehow position things so that its mobility is taken away - and you can - then that skimmer can be shot down in a single turn. Tau rely on this more than others. Falcons can hold their own in most situations, but an Annihilator will wipe the floor with it after one turn of shooting.
OK takeing down skimmers 101:
Problem with skimmers is that against any general worth his salt, you will only get glancing hits. Worse still, against some your strength will never count as higher than 8.
The key is not the strength but the number of shots. As someone pointed out skimmers have low armour, you need to hit then repeatedly. You do need high strength but this is secondary to the number of shots.
If you can get to side or rear armour then str 5-6 special weapons or str 4 wepons are fine, a tac squad with a heavy bolter will rip appart a falcon from the rear. Assult cannons are good but expensive since you must buy terminators, which in turn become fodder for star cannon.
It does depend on how your whole army is structured, if you have a stand back and shoot army then you dont really want the odd unit going skimmer hunting with a pwer fist, even if they can catch them as they will just get picked off.
Some stuff that does work includes:
Land speeder tornado:
the heavy bolter and assult cannon makes for really nasty work VS eldar, it can deep strike and then take down the back armour of the faclon, equally it can go down flanks and hit the side armour, but it is also of use vs other stuff (this weekend my tornado took out 4 out of 5 reapers on the turn it arrived, the exarch fled off the field
Predetor destructor with heavy B side sponsons
Bike squadrons with melta guns or attack bikes with multimeltas or heavy bolters give you some options
Tac squads with heavy bolter and plasma guns have decent range and can hit most armour
Dev squads with missile launchers also can be effective
Thanks for your suggestions, they're all pretty good. However, does anyone have any feedback on my Drop Pod idea directly?
The whole point of the Drop Pod idea is to get directly to the AV10 area and destroy the skimmers quickly. Shooting from the front is a real pain.
Eldar either have holofields or powerfields. Tau have AV13 Hammerheads and have something which allows them to ignore some immobilised results.
I was really looking for a tactic to try and quickly deal with the skimmer problem (and hopefully encourage my friends to stop maxing out on skimmers taboot! )
Get skimmers of your own.
Land Speeders with multi-meltas are flexible and mobile enough to get to that side and back armour and get close enough to get that sweet, sweet 2d6 armour penetration. Your opponent will either overlook them, to his detriment, or focus his power on them, effectively letting the rest of your army go free.
