I was wandeing if you use morters at all? are they effective? do you use them as heavy weapons, or just in big quantities like in soupport squads?

I use them in my Command HQ squad, and put them out of LOS, as my HQ uses Master Vox to lead my army.
Are Mortars effective, no, but everyone seems not to worry about them eaither, and unless they are a very smart player, leave my HQ squad alone.
I think they would be effective against hoard armies, but so are Heavy Bolters for the same points.

dedicated Mortar squads are fun, but not effective. if that 1st shot misses, the next 2 will be bad as well.
however, if you have 3 mortars in 3 seperate command squads, you have a VERY good chance of having 1 of those mortars getting a direct hit and you also have the ablity to pin 3 squads.
against MEQ? mortars suffer (they'll surprise you once in a while).
against Ork/Nid/Eldar/DE/Tau/IG/LatD/Kroot they are not bad at all
and they're the cats meow in Patrol games having indirect fire in Patrol is invaluable, forcing your opponent to come to you
And they are also completly against the philosophy of Combat Patrol games. What army would patrol with mortar squads?Originally Posted by BoxANT
As Diggums Hammer said, in a command HQ with a master vox they are an excellent choice, otherwise, they are reasonably effective against other light infantry but rather pointless against heavy infatry (Marines, CSM and Necrons)
Well my friend will be using them more often after my tyranids were forced to go through a small pass to get to his soldiers. He landed a mortar shot right on top and (through a few lucky rolls) he killed 7 gaunts!

actually i don't use "mortar squads". but my platoon command squads have a mortar. my platoons (in patrol) have a command squad w/ mortar, 1st squad w/ HB, and 2nd Squad w/ Missle.
they're based of a the platoon orginization in WWII. where platoons would bring mortar, machinegun, and bazooka support.
so my "patrol" is actually 2 platoons on a scouting mission.
I like boxant's aproach, it works in real life. While I know this is nothing close to real life, it is or can be made to be that tactics in real life work in the game.
