Once you have your troops add some Lemans and Basilisks. They are are great and are useful vs almost any other army. You really cant go wrong by adding these tanks into your army.

First get forty men and a chimera. This will fill your basic troops and HQ requirment. 5 guys for HQ, 5 guys for command section, 20 guys for 2 spquads and 10 guys with the chimera for and armoured fist squad. Then expand as needed, probobly some heavy weapon teams, leman russ and a basilisk.

    Ok here's my tip...
First give a frag about tanks at the moment...
Consentrate on the compulsory choices first.
An HQ squad, and the two troop choices.
Consider looking at eBay, I did that and I got some 60 valhalla minis for around
    50£ pounds.

    Then consider the heavy support.
Go first for the basilisk and then maybe the traditional leman russ.
After that consider some fast attack, maybe a squad of rough riders or even a sentinel squad.

I'd say get the ordinary Leman Russ Battle Tank _first, then you can add other tanks to the tank park. Ideal "beginner's setup" would be two Russ and one Basilisk.

Why? Because of the versatility. The Basilisk is alot more fragile, and even if it's some 30 points cheaper (without it's main strength - the indirect fire) it just can't serve as a multi purpose tool as well as an ordinary Leman Russ.

You can have the Russ advancing up the table along side your troops if you decide to play the offensive part (no offense... heh) or it can hang back and shoot it out with the best of them if you're on the defense. With the basilisk you're stuck with keeping it in the back, as it's so fragile (being open topped and poorly armoured).

The basilisk is fine - but it requires more know-how to use effectively and that's not always the best for a new-comer to the guard.

    Good luck!
